Many Final Fantasy fans were sad to see the series move away from traditional turn-based battles. There’s talk that it might make a comeback, but until then, those who miss it have a couple of choices. They can replay the older Final Fantasy games, or find newer titles that still use that classic turn-based style. While revisiting favorites like *Final Fantasy X* is great, sometimes players are looking for a fresh experience.
While newer Final Fantasy games, like the remakes of *Final Fantasy 7*, have moved away from traditional turn-based battles, that style of combat is still popular. Games such as *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* and Pokemon demonstrate there’s still a demand for strategic, thoughtful battles. These 5 JRPGs offer that classic turn-based experience, letting you carefully plan each move, all while providing fresh stories and worlds to discover.
5. Chrono Trigger

Platform(s): PC via Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, iOS, Android, SNES
Price: $14.99
Originally launched in 1995 by Square Enix, *Chrono Trigger* is still considered one of the best role-playing games ever made. Similar to *Final Fantasy IV* and later games in that series, *Chrono Trigger* features an Active Time Battle system, which moves away from simple turn-based combat. The game’s “Wait” feature gives players extra time to strategize, blending real-time action with turn-based elements. While the battles feel similar to *Final Fantasy* games starting with *Final Fantasy IV*, *Chrono Trigger* still delivers that classic, old-school *Final Fantasy* feel.
Like many games from the studio behind *Final Fantasy*, *Chrono Trigger* shares a similar style. Created by the team known for *Dragon Ball* and *Final Fantasy*, its art and gameplay reflect their signature touch. Fans have long requested a modern update of this classic JRPG, which is currently available on PC through Steam, mobile devices, and older consoles. While a remake hasn’t been announced, the original game is still a fantastic experience.
4. Sea of Stars

Platform(s): PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S
Price: $34.99 USD
Released in 2023, *Sea of Stars* is a fantasy role-playing game heavily inspired by astrology. Players take on the roles of children with powers connected to the Sun and Moon. It quickly gained recognition, winning The Game Award for Best Independent Game that same year. The game features classic, turn-based combat with a party of characters, similar to the *Final Fantasy* series, and boasts a compelling, epic storyline.
Sea of Stars creates a stunning fantasy world with its colorful 2D pixel art and lively lighting effects, making its characters and environments really stand out. Players now have even more content to explore thanks to a recently released, free downloadable update. Plus, the game offers a fun couch co-op mode for up to three players.
3. Dragon Quest

Platform(s): Vary by title; Dragon Quest XI is available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4
Price: Varies by title
The Dragon Quest series is a fantastic set of Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) created by Square Enix, the company also known for Final Fantasy. Starting in 1986, the series has continued to release popular titles, with the latest, *Dragon Quest XI*, coming out in 2018. Classic games are also being updated for modern audiences; *Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD Remake* is scheduled for release in October 2025. These games offer a traditional fantasy adventure, taking players on a quest throughout the world of Torland.
The Dragon Quest series, including recent games, features classic turn-based battles. If you enjoy party-based RPGs where you can carefully plan your strategy, Dragon Quest offers a similar experience to older Final Fantasy titles. I’m especially excited for the upcoming *Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake*, but any game in the series should satisfy fans looking for that classic Final Fantasy feel.
2. Octopath Traveler

Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5
Price: $59.99
Fans were thrilled to see *Octopath Traveler 0* announced during a recent Nintendo Direct. The original *Octopath Traveler* was a fantastic game from Square Enix, even earning a nomination for Best RPG when it came out. It’s known for its unique and in-depth turn-based combat, which players found both challenging and fun.
Fans of classic Final Fantasy games will appreciate the refined turn-based combat in *Octopath Traveler*. The game takes place in the new world of Osterra and lets you experience the journeys of eight unique characters. Released in 2018, many players see it as a beautiful tribute to older Japanese role-playing games, offering a modern take on the features that made those early Final Fantasy titles so beloved.
1. Persona 5 Royal

Platform(s): PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
Price: $59.99
Persona 5 is a fantastic addition to the popular Persona series. It’s been a huge hit with both critics and players, largely thanks to its engaging Confidant system. The game features deep, turn-based combat that evolves based on your relationships with your teammates. Though it swaps the traditional fantasy setting of older Final Fantasy games for a modern aesthetic, it’s a strong JRPG that any fan of turn-based battles should try. It rightfully earned the title of Best RPG at the 2016 Game Awards, and most players would agree it lives up to the praise.
In *Persona 5*, you play as Joker, a high school student who leads a double life. By day, he attends school, but by night, he explores the Metaverse, fighting enemies and completing dungeons. *Persona 5 Royal*, released in 2022, is an expanded version of the game with all previously released downloadable content and improved compatibility for newer consoles.
