5 TV Sci-Fi Series Begging For Reboots

Science fiction shows are incredibly popular on television. Many become beloved by dedicated fans or achieve worldwide recognition by sparking our imaginations and using elements like aliens, distant planets, and futuristic settings to explore issues we face today.

As a huge sci-fi fan, I’ve noticed something really interesting: certain shows just won’t die, and they keep finding ways to come back! Take Star Trek, for example. After The Next Generation rebooted the whole thing, it just kept going with series after series. And Doctor Who? The reboot from 20 years ago is still incredibly popular, and the show is almost 61 years old! It makes me think there are tons of other classic sci-fi series from the past that deserve a fresh start, and I’m hoping we see some of them revived soon.

5) The Twilight Zone

The original Twilight Zone, created by Rod Serling, has been revived a few times before, but those attempts haven’t been very successful. A reboot in the 1980s retold some of the most famous episodes and introduced new ones, but most viewers agreed it lacked the magic of the original, likely because Serling himself had passed away.

The recent revival of The Twilight Zone was actually quite innovative for its time. Today, we’re seeing a lot more science fiction and horror shows presented in an anthology format, like American Horror Story, which proves the concept has really taken off.

What made The Twilight Zone so great was Rod Serling’s talent for using sci-fi to address important issues like prejudice and racism. We need stories like those now more than ever, and a new version of the show could be a hit if it created fresh, original tales instead of just remaking old episodes.

4) Quantum Leap*

The recent version of Quantum Leap wasn’t a complete restart of the series, but rather a continuation. It followed a new main character who traveled through time using today’s technology, and unlike the original show, his choices in the past directly changed the present.

While many fans were let down by the new version of the show, the strong reactions demonstrate there’s still a real desire for a true Quantum Leap reboot. A series that stayed closer to the original concept would likely be a hit and give the creators the opportunity to explore compelling, relevant stories.

3) Red Dwarf

Red Dwarf was a British science fiction comedy that gained a following in both the UK and the US. The show centers around a lone survivor of a spaceship accident, set thousands of years in the future. He’s joined by a frustrating hologram of his former boss and a man who evolved from a cat brought onto the ship. Praised for its clever sci-fi humor – often compared to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Red Dwarf is widely regarded as one of the top sci-fi comedies of the 1980s.

A fresh take on this show would be a much-needed escape from all the serious news happening right now. Plus, a funny sci-fi series like this could get more people excited about the genre as a whole.

2) Sliders

As a big sci-fi fan, I always thought Sliders was way ahead of its time. It was one of the first shows to really play with the idea of alternate realities – the whole multiverse concept – well before it became so common. The premise was simple but brilliant: a group of five people accidentally opened a portal and started ‘sliding’ between different versions of Earth, constantly searching for a way home.

As a sci-fi fan, this show immediately reminded me of Doctor Who. The main characters, these ‘sliders,’ were basically at the mercy of a broken machine – they couldn’t actually choose where they ended up. It led to these really cool ‘planet of the week’ adventures, jumping between different eras and societies as they desperately tried to find their way back home. It was just a lot of fun, episodic sci-fi at its best.

As a huge sci-fi fan, seeing how popular Doctor Who still is really makes me think it’s the perfect moment to bring back Sliders. We could have that same ‘different worlds’ vibe, but with a fresh story. Honestly, a reboot could be even better than the original. Think about it – modern special effects could make jumping between dimensions look incredible! I remember hearing NBC was kicking around the idea back in 2019, and I’m telling you, it’s time to make it happen. We need a new Sliders!

1) Firefly

Many fans consider Firefly a show that ended far too soon. This unique series followed a crew of survivors from a lost civil war as they navigated life in space in the year 2517. Though it tackled relevant political and social themes and gained a dedicated fanbase, the show was unfortunately canceled after just 11 episodes.

The story of independent individuals battling a powerful, unified world order feels particularly timely today, and that’s likely why Firefly remains so beloved even after all these years. Because of its continued popularity, a revival of the series has a strong chance of succeeding.
