5 Underrated Avengers Teams That Deserve More Love

The Avengers are known as Earth’s greatest heroes, protecting the universe from various dangers. Over time, several smaller Avengers teams formed to tackle specific problems or protect certain areas. While groups like the West Coast Avengers, Secret Avengers, and Young Avengers are fairly well-known, many other unique and powerful teams have existed with less publicity. These lesser-known Avengers teams are full of incredible heroes who have saved lives throughout the Marvel Universe.

As a critic, I’ve been following these lesser-known teams operating in the shadow of the main Avengers for a while now, and let me tell you, they’re constantly battling threats across the galaxy and on Earth, quietly saving lives. They don’t always get the recognition they deserve, but they’re a vital part of keeping us safe.

5) Great Lakes Avengers

Okay, let me tell you about the Great Lakes Avengers. Compared to the usual Marvel powerhouses, these heroes are… different. They’re not exactly known for their strength or brilliance, but they genuinely try to do good. We’re talking about a seriously quirky team – Mr. Immortal, who you just can’t kill; Flatman, a hero who’s literally two-dimensional and can stretch; Big Bertha, who’s, well, big; Doorman, who creates portals; and Dinah Soar, a woman who can fly and has reptilian features. They’re a lot more comedic relief than your typical superhero team. While they might not be the most famous heroes around, these lovable misfits are the main line of defense for the Midwest against some seriously powerful baddies like Maelstrom, Graviton, and even Fin Fang Foom. They’re underdogs, but they get the job done – and they’re a lot of fun to watch!

4) Avengers 1959

Before the famous team of Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk came together in 1963, Nick Fury formed an earlier version of the Avengers in 1959. As the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fury assembled this secret group to track down supervillains connected to the Nazis. He teamed up with his friend Dum Dum Dugan and recruited a diverse group of heroes and even some villains. This team included the detective known as Blonde Phantom, ex-spy Dominic Fortune, the immortal monster hunter Ulysses Bloodstone, the Atlantean princess Namorita, the Nazi hunter Silver Sable, the skilled tracker Kraven the Hunter, and the dangerous mutant Sabretooth. Together, they stopped numerous Nazi villains from rebuilding their empire, including a fake Red Skull and Count Von Blitzkrieg. Though the team eventually disbanded, their secret missions saved many lives and brought justice to those who had committed war crimes.

3) Avengers Unity Division

A common criticism of Marvel Comics is the frequent conflict between the Avengers and X-Men. The Avengers Unity Division was created to address this, aiming to show that humans and mutants could cooperate. Following the Avengers VS X-Men storyline, Captain America formed a team with members from both groups to demonstrate peaceful collaboration. The initial team included heroes like Thor, Wasp, Wonder Man, Scarlet Witch, Wolverine, Rogue, Havok, and Sunfire, and they faced villains such as Red Skull and Kang the Conqueror. Over time, the team’s members changed, adding heroes like Deadpool, Spider-Man, and Cable. The Avengers Unity Division represents a hopeful alliance between humans and mutants, offering a change from the typical rivalry between the Avengers and X-Men.

2) Multiversal Avengers

After a lifetime of being a villain, a version of Loki called Avenger Prime arrived in a bizarre place called the God Quarry and decided to make amends. He gathered a team of Avengers from across the multiverse to battle the dangerous Mephisto and the Multiversal Masters of Evil, who threatened to destroy everything. This team wasn’t your typical group of heroes; it included unique versions like an Ant-Man Tony Stark, a cosmic-powered Black Panther called Star Panther, a Thor who used the Iron Fist, and a Wolverine with the power of the Phoenix Force. To bolster their ranks, they even assembled massive armies of Captain Americas and Captain Marvels. This Multiversal Avengers team is the largest – and potentially most powerful – group of heroes ever assembled to protect the multiverse.

1) Avengers 1,000,000 B.C.

Long before modern times, during the Stone Age, Marvel’s first team of superheroes came together to fight powerful enemies like the Celestials and Multiversal Masters of Evil. This team, known as the Avengers 1,000,000 B.C., is unique because each member was the very first to take on a heroic role that would be passed down through generations. The team included young Odin, a mutant with the Phoenix Force called “Fire Hair,” a Ghost Rider who rode a mammoth, a primitive Moon Knight, the early Sorcerer Supreme named Agamotto, the first Black Panther, the original Iron Fist, and a powerful caveman wielding the Starbrand. These heroes established the groundwork for all future generations of heroes and helped secure a bright future for humanity.
