When Game of Thrones first aired on HBO, it changed television by demonstrating that expensive, complex fantasy stories could work well as a weekly series. Before this, such epic tales were usually limited to movies, as TV executives didn’t think the genre would attract a large enough audience for a long-running show. The show, based on George R.R. Martin’s books, proved them wrong, becoming a huge commercial and critical success. Even the controversies surrounding the final season couldn’t diminish Game of Thrones’ lasting impact.
Fans are flocking back to the world of Westeros, making House of the Dragon a huge hit and earning A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms widespread critical acclaim. HBO is planning to build on this success with new shows exploring Aegon’s Conquest and the adventures of Corlys Velaryon. But beyond these stories, several other large-scale fantasy series are in the works, and some have the potential to become even more popular than Game of Thrones.
5) Fourth Wing

Amazon MGM Studios is working on a live-action TV series based on Rebecca Yarros’s bestselling fantasy novel, Fourth Wing. Meredith Averill is leading the project as showrunner. The story follows a young woman, initially physically weak, who must endure a dangerous dragon-riding training program at Basgiath War College. The series, also produced with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, will combine thrilling dragon battles with complex military drama.
Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing benefited greatly from the enthusiastic support of the BookTok community, which significantly influences current book trends – their passion even surpasses the pre-TV popularity of Game of Thrones. Beyond that, the story’s blend of dangerous challenges and compelling romance makes it more emotionally engaging than many darker fantasy novels. And, by immediately introducing the intense connection between dragon riders and their dragons, the story quickly delivers the exciting action and visuals viewers want, without needing a long, slow build-up.
4) Magic: The Gathering

I’m so excited to hear that the Magic: The Gathering animated series is really happening on Netflix! It’s been a long time coming, and I was starting to lose hope. Apparently, Terry Matalas is now leading the creative side of things, and he’s confirmed they’ve finished writing all the scripts for season one – they’re even starting to create animatics, which is a huge step! What’s really smart is that they’re going with animation instead of live-action. It means they can build this incredible magical world without running into the usual budget problems that often hold those kinds of projects back.
The creative flexibility of Magic: The Gathering lets the story truly capture the grand scale of its magic and faithfully recreate the feeling of playing the card game. Because the series takes place in a vast, limitless multiverse, it has the potential to be even more expansive than Game of Thrones. Unlike that show, which focused on one continent, this story can move freely between different worlds, offering stunning visuals and a diverse range of magical creatures that wouldn’t fit in a more realistic, medieval setting.
3) The Forgotten Realms

After plans for a Dungeons & Dragons universe on Paramount+ fell through, a live-action TV series based on the popular game is now being developed at Netflix. It’s titled The Forgotten Realms, and will be led by executive producer Shawn Levy and showrunner Drew Crevello. The series will be set in the game’s most well-known world.
Instead of basing the show on a single book, the creators of The Forgotten Realms are building a brand new story within the world’s existing mythology. This gives them more creative control over the story’s speed and twists, which is a benefit compared to directly adapting a novel. The show aims to capture the hopeful and team-oriented feeling of a classic roleplaying game, offering a more uplifting experience than shows like Game of Thrones, and creating a sense of limitless magic.
2) The Dark Tower

Mike Flanagan, the well-known horror director, is working on a TV series based on Stephen King’s epic The Dark Tower for Prime Video. He recently announced that all the scripts for the first season are finished and that this project is his main focus right now. The plan is for a multi-season show, potentially with accompanying movies, that tells the story of the last Gunslinger as he travels between worlds in pursuit of The Dark Tower – a mysterious structure vital to the stability of reality.
The TV adaptation of The Dark Tower could be revolutionary because it doesn’t fit neatly into any one genre. Mike Flanagan’s skill at building suspenseful, character-focused horror, combined with Stephen King’s unique mix of westerns, post-apocalyptic settings, and fantastical elements, creates a truly unpredictable world. Plus, the story’s use of multiple universes will allow the show to constantly change its look and feel, delivering a vast and emotionally powerful story.
1) Harry Potter

HBO is creating a new Harry Potter television series, planned to debut in early 2027. The show, led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, will be a more detailed adaptation of the books than the original movies, allowing for deeper exploration of the characters and story. Last year, the studio cast Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley to play the main characters.
The Harry Potter series has the potential to become more popular and long-lasting than Game of Thrones largely because of its massive, existing fanbase that includes multiple generations of fans worldwide. The enduring popularity of the Wizarding World makes it a hugely valuable property, guaranteeing a large audience from the start. Now, with HBO’s high production quality and commitment to a more detailed look at the wizarding war, the network is in a great position to create the ultimate magical coming-of-age story for today’s viewers.
