I’m so excited for the next Dune movie and Steven Spielberg’s UFO film! But it got me thinking about what else is coming for us sci-fi lovers. It looks like 2026 is going to be the start of a really great run of new films. No matter what you’re into – whether it’s mind-bending, realistic sci-fi, epic space adventures, or stories about the end of the world – there are some amazing things headed our way, and I can’t wait!
These films are all still somewhat uncertain in their final form, but each one shows real potential to be something amazing. We’ve gathered this list of the most compelling science fiction movies currently in development, with planned releases starting in 2027 and beyond. They range from early ideas to projects just beginning the editing process.
5) Vacation Guide to the Solar System
Inspired by Olivia Koski and Jana Grcevich’s 2017 book, “Vacation Guide to the Solar System,” this new science fiction adventure takes place 50 years from now. It follows a family whose fun trip around the solar system quickly becomes a desperate fight to get back home to Earth.
The upcoming film is being described as a blend of Jurassic Park‘s adventurous feel and the scientific accuracy of The Martian. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, known for their work on films like Spider-Man: Homecoming (which they wrote) and Game Night (which they co-directed), are currently attached to the project. While they’re signed on to write and produce, it’s unclear if they will also direct. The film’s development has been slow-going since Paramount Players acquired it in a competitive bidding situation back in 2017.
4) Proxy

A new science fiction thriller from Hungarian filmmakers Kata Wéber and Kornél Mundruczó tells the story of a woman who unexpectedly recovers from a serious medical event, only to find her mind now resides within an artificial body. Although the film was announced in 2022, a release date hasn’t been set yet, and progress has been slow. However, anticipation remains strong thanks to the filmmakers’ reputations.
Aaron Ryder, the producer behind the acclaimed film Arrival, is involved in this project. The directing duo of Kornél Mundruczó and Réka Wéber have a strong track record, including the Oscar-nominated Pieces of a Woman and the unique sci-fi drama Jupiter’s Moon. While Blake Lively was initially cast, her participation in the film is currently uncertain. However, with this talented team and the intriguing story, Proxy is shaping up to be a remarkable film.
3) One Second After

Based on the 2009 novel One Second After by William R. Forstchen, the story takes place in Black Mountain, North Carolina, after a powerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP) cripples the United States. John Matherson, a college professor and former military officer, struggles to keep his family and neighbors safe as society breaks down.
J. Michael Straczynski, the renowned creator of Babylon 5, wrote the screenplay for this new film. Scott Rogers, a stunt coordinator with experience on hits like John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Bourne Ultimatum, is making his first turn as a director. The film stars Famke Janssen, Josh Holloway (from Lost), Hannah John-Kamen, and Mary McDonnell (known for Battlestar Galactica). With filming completed in December, this post-apocalyptic thriller is expected to arrive in theaters soon.
2) Star Wars: Starfighter

Following complaints that there were too many Star Wars movies being released, Disney and Lucasfilm have scaled back production. This puts a lot of expectation on their upcoming projects, including Starfighter. Set roughly five years after The Rise of Skywalker, Starfighter is planned as a unique, standalone story. The casting of Ryan Gosling, a two-time Oscar nominee known for Blade Runner 2049, has generated excitement among fans. Gosling himself praised the script, saying it has a “great story” with “great and original characters” and is “filled with so much heart and adventure.”
The film also stars Mia Goth and Amy Adams, and is directed by Shawn Levy, known for films like Deadpool & Wolverine and Free Guy. Filming finished in late 2025, and very little news or pictures have been shared since. It’s currently being edited and refined, but fans will have to wait until May 28, 2027, to see if it can reignite excitement for the Star Wars universe.
1) Rendezvous with Rama

As a huge sci-fi fan, I’m incredibly excited about the upcoming movie based on Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama. It’s a classic – it won a bunch of awards back in ’73! Denis Villeneuve is directing, and Eric Roth is writing the script, which already has me hyped. The story itself isn’t super complicated – it’s about a massive alien ship entering our solar system and the astronauts who go to investigate. But the book is full of these huge, mind-blowing ideas, and I’m really curious to see how they’ll bring all that to life on the big screen. It’s a story that really makes you think, and I’m hoping the movie captures that same sense of wonder.
Hollywood has been buzzing about this project, but Denis Villeneuve – the director known for successfully adapting seemingly impossible stories like Dune and Story of Your Life (which became Arrival) – gives fans hope. He even called Rama “Arrival on steroids” in an interview with Empire. There’s a lot to look forward to! However, before we see Arthur C. Clarke’s complex sci-fi novel brought to the screen, Villeneuve needs to complete the third Dune movie, currently scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
