5 Weirdest Comics Crossovers Ever

As a huge comics fan, one of the things I love most is that they can tell any story. That’s how we get these amazing, larger-than-life superheroes and plots that just wouldn’t make sense anywhere else. And it’s also why crossovers are so cool – seeing characters from different universes team up just works better in comics. We all get excited about Marvel and DC crossovers, even though they’re rare, and it’s always a blast when bigger franchises like Godzilla or Sonic the Hedgehog show up alongside our favorite heroes. It’s just a really fun experience that comics deliver so well!

Some comic book crossovers are just really odd. While these strange team-ups don’t necessarily make for bad stories or comics, the initial concept can be quite bizarre. You’ll find everything from sci-fi favorites joining forces with the X-Men to soap opera characters gaining superpowers. Here are five of the strangest crossovers that actually came to life.

5) Star Trek/X-Men, Star Trek: The Next Generation/X-Men: Second Contact, and Planet X

Believe it or not, the X-Men and Star Trek teamed up in comic books! Back in the 1990s, Marvel and Paramount Pictures made a deal allowing Marvel to create comics based on Paramount’s properties, like Star Trek. This led to a crossover between the two franchises, appearing not just once, but twice in comic form, as well as in a novel.

The stories in the comics and novel aren’t bad, just a bit surprising. What’s really neat about this one is the crossover with The Next Generation. It lets us see Jean-Luc Picard, famously played by Patrick Stewart on TV, interact with Professor X – a role Stewart would later take on in the X-Men films just a few years later.

4) Marvel/Guiding Light

Here’s a strange but true story: in 2006, Marvel Comics and the soap opera Guiding Light teamed up for a special episode. In the 15,038th episode, titled “She’s a Marvel,” the character Harley Cooper gains superpowers after a Halloween mishap and becomes the superhero Guiding Light. She starts fighting crime in her town, battling villains named Dash and Bash Carnage. But when she realizes the downsides of having powers, she surprisingly gives them up by jumping into a lake. It really happened!

Things get even stranger when Guiding Light shows up in a Marvel Comics story! She appears in “A New Light” within the Civil War: Choosing Sides #1 issue. It’s basically the same story as her TV appearance, but now features Marvel heroes – Iron Man even gives her a special Avengers call card. It’s all incredibly bizarre.

3) KFC: Across the Universe

What happens when Green Lantern teams up with Colonel Sanders? Apparently, a cosmic sandwich hunt! Colonel Sanders is trying to sell his new Chicken Zinger sandwiches across the universe, but they get stolen. Green Lantern Hal Jordan steps in to help track down the thief, who turns out to be the greedy Larfleeze. In a surprising turn of events, Colonel Sanders convinces Larfleeze to start his own KFC, giving him endless sandwiches. As a reward for his help, the Guardians of the Universe make Colonel Sanders an honorary Green Lantern!

It’s hard to believe this even happened! This special promotional item was a free giveaway at Comic-Con, but the idea of Larfleeze running a KFC, or Colonel Sanders as a Green Lantern, is just wild.

2) Archie Meets the Punisher

This plot sounds like something from the TV show Riverdale, but it actually originated in a 1994 comic book. The story is wild: The Punisher is after a dangerous criminal named Red, who happens to be a dead ringer for Archie Andrews. This leads the Punisher to initially believe Archie is the villain. Once he realizes his mistake, the Punisher has to join forces with Archie to rescue Veronica, who has been kidnapped by the real Red.

Although the idea of this team-up seems strange, the comic book is surprisingly enjoyable. The unlikely combination of characters actually works, the artwork by Stan Goldberg and John Buscema is strong, and the story turns out to be quite engaging. It’s also worth noting that this crossover opened the door to other unusual pairings for Archie, like those with Kiss and the Predator.

1) Amalgam Comics

Okay, so “Amalgam” is interesting. It’s billed as the first official team-up between Marvel and DC characters, but don’t expect a straight-up hero vs. hero brawl or a classic alliance. Instead, it’s all about blending them. Think Superman and Captain America rolled into one new guy, “Super Soldier.” Or how about Hal Jordan and Tony Stark becoming “Iron Lantern”? It gets really wild, too – you even see characters reimagined in completely unexpected ways, like a Bruce Wayne working for S.H.I.E.L.D. It’s less a crossover and more of a character remix, honestly.

The Amalgam comics aren’t all perfect, but they’re definitely captivating. Many comic book readers still fondly remember this unique universe and would love to see it revisited, as it stands out from most team-up events.
