Werewolf movies used to be incredibly popular within the horror genre, often defined by their focus on monster transformations and scares. Films like An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, and Wolf are now considered classic horror movies.
New technology and computer-generated imagery (CGI) have changed the horror genre, putting it at a turning point. Many directors and major studios now prioritize large-scale monster movies with impressive visual effects, such as Jurassic Park and Godzilla. Because of this focus, werewolf films – known for their practical effects and raw, realistic feel – have become less common.
Horror comedies didn’t disappear, though. In the last ten years, there have been some great additions to the genre. Films like The Cursed and Animal have prioritized emotional depth, while others like Werewolves Within and Wolf Cop 2 have gone for laughs.
We’ve rounded up 5 werewolf movies coming out in 2026 and later, ranging from big-budget thrillers to smaller, independent films that could be hidden gems.
‘Werewolf Hunt’
March 1, 2026
Werewolf Hunt follows a skilled team of hunters as they pursue the most dangerous prey of all: a werewolf. The movie takes place in a secluded, dark wilderness and combines the suspense of a survival story with terrifying creature horror, offering a fresh take on the classic hunter-versus-prey scenario.
The Hunter Becomes the Hunted
Josh Ridgway, the creator of the 2019 werewolf horror short Howl (featuring Sean Patrick Flanery), is also behind Werewolf Hunt. Expect a thrilling and intense experience with brutal fights, suspenseful moments, and difficult decisions that build to a violent finale.
‘Dead Howling’
October 31, 2026
Dead Howling is a dark fantasy film about a werewolf who hunts zombies. He finds a new reason to live when he meets two people and promises to help them find safety.
‘Dead Howling’ Is Eyeing Up a Halloween Release Date
Okay, so I just heard some cool news! Temuera Morrison – you might remember him from the awesome Kiwi film Once Were Warriors, or more recently as Boba Fett in The Book of Boba Fett – is going to be in a new movie with Ryan Kwanten and Tom Burlinson. It’s slated to come out next Halloween, which is perfect timing, honestly. I’m already intrigued!
‘Werwulf’
December 25, 2026
Robert Eggers’ new horror film, Werwulf, is set to come out on Christmas Day in 2026. The movie, set in the 13th century, stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe. Eggers has described the script as his darkest work yet.
Robert Eggers Has Proven Himself To Be a Director To Watch
Robert Eggers burst onto the scene as a director with the highly praised film The Witch in 2015. Since then, he’s become known as one of the most innovative filmmakers around, leading the way in a new wave of sophisticated horror movies like The Lighthouse (2019) and last year’s Nosferatu.
With its incredibly accurate historical details and ability to build genuinely terrifying scenes, Werwulf is shaping up to be one of the most frightening and unforgettable horror films of 2026.
‘Wolfland’
Release Date TBD
Pierce Brosnan is teaming up with his son, Sean Brosnan, for a new werewolf movie. Sean will direct, and Pierce will star as a seasoned werewolf hunter who’s pulled out of retirement. The film is an action-packed revenge story about a teenager who hires the hunter to find the creature that attacked him. It’s being described as a large-scale and thrilling adventure.
Expect Jaw-Dropping Creature Designs
Andy Serkis’ studio, The Imaginarium Studios, is in charge of the visual effects and creature design for the upcoming werewolf movie. This points to a visually stunning film, as the studio is known for creating incredible characters in blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine, Godzilla, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The movie is currently being developed and is expected to come out in 2026.
‘Shiver’
Release Date TBD
If you enjoy stories about werewolves but aren’t a fan of scary horror, you might like Shiver. This upcoming romantic fantasy film, based on Maggie Stiefvater’s popular young adult novel, features a strong cast including Greg Kinnear, Maddie Ziegler, Levi Miller, Sofia Wylie, Iman Vellani, Lyon Daniels, Alexander Ludwig, Ross Butler, and Alicia Witt.
Production Has Currently Been Halted
The story follows Grace, who was rescued as a child by a wolf with yellow eyes, and later finds love with a young man named Sam who shares the same striking eyes. Their relationship is complicated by a dangerous secret: Sam fights a battle against a monstrous transformation each winter, and risks losing his humanity completely. Grace desperately tries to help him avoid this fate. Sadly, despite beginning post-production in 2025, the project has been put on hold because the production company failed to secure the necessary funding, so there’s currently no confirmed release date.
