A clever twist can completely change a story, sending it down unexpected paths and making you rethink everything. But a badly executed twist can ruin your immersion, leaving you feeling silly or uncomfortable with how it’s written. And a predictable twist just feels dull and overdone. It’s really hard to pull off a good twist in a video game, and many games fall short. Here are five of the worst twists in video game history – twists that often fail on multiple levels.
5) Batman: Arkham Knight

Before *Batman: Arkham Knight* came out, a lot of us were convinced the Arkham Knight was Jason Todd – one of the past Robins. But Rocksteady, the game developers, kept saying he was a totally new character, someone Batman fans hadn’t met before. They even said they wanted to really make their own impact on the Batman story with this character.
About halfway through the game, the Arkham Knight’s true identity was revealed to be Jason Todd. The twist itself wasn’t poorly conceived, but the developers mishandled it by downplaying the reveal. While surprising fans is good, Rocksteady went too far, and it ultimately backfired.
4) The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope

I’m dating myself by mentioning a show that was most popular in 1979, but season nine of *Dallas* is a perfect example of a terrible plot twist. After the huge success of the “Who Shot J.R.?” cliffhanger, the show kept trying to top itself, eventually leading to a storyline where everything was revealed to be a dream within a character’s mind. It was widely criticized, and that particular plot device should have been avoided altogether.
Supermassive Games used a similar twist in *Little Hope*, revealing that the characters are actually fragments of a single person’s mind. Like in *The Quarry* (previously known as *Dallas*), this reveal doesn’t quite land and makes the player feel like their choices didn’t matter.
3) Bionic Commando

While *Bionic Commando* isn’t necessarily a storytelling failure, it’s more of a simple, not particularly strong, game. You play as Nathan “Rad” Spencer, who has a bionic arm that allows for interesting ways to move around and interact with the environment, leading to some fun gameplay moments.
While playing, you discover the severed arm belongs to Spencer’s wife, Jayne Magdalene. It seems absurd, and that’s because the game’s developers, Grin, chose to go in that direction. Unfortunately, this plot point doesn’t land well and has been heavily criticized by players and reviewers alike.
2) Twelve Minutes

The game *Twelve Minutes* doesn’t have just one surprising plot twist – it has two. The story revolves around a time loop where the player learns his wife is expecting a child. Things quickly escalate when a police officer arrives, accusing the wife of murder. After figuring out the first mystery of the loop, players discover an even bigger shock: the husband and wife are half-siblings, and the police officer is their father, desperately trying to prevent a relationship between them.
It was already a problematic twist, but the inclusion of incest would have been enough to make it completely fail. However, the developer then made things even worse by revealing, similar to what happened in *Dallas* and *Little Hope*, that it was all just a dream. Ultimately, it’s a terrible story with no redeeming qualities.
1) Heavy Rain

To put it simply, the big reveal about who the killer is in *Heavy Rain* isn’t very good, and it doesn’t even logically fit the story. The developers at Quantic Dream tried to surprise players by having them control the killer, but that meant they couldn’t fully show the actual narrative.
The game presents Scott Shelby’s story in a way that hides the big twist, but unfortunately, this also makes the twist unbelievable. The events simply don’t add up, leaving you feeling tricked by the reveal. While a twist can be effective if it’s logical, the creators of *Heavy Rain* don’t manage to achieve that here.
