5 Worst Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Characters Who Ruin the Game

In the realm of fighting games, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boasts one of the largest character rosters. What makes it truly remarkable is that it includes some of the most legendary characters in gaming. Regrettably, a few of these characters can dampen the enjoyment of playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Whether they are frustrating to confront or alter the gameplay mechanics, here are five characters from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that are particularly difficult to contend with.

1) Steve/Alex

Steve/Alex stands out as the most noticeable player breaching the rules on this list, which is why discussions about banning them at tournaments can become intense. There are strong points on either side of the argument. Steve significantly transforms the game’s dynamics due to his ability to construct blocks. This modification affects neutral situations, advantages, and overall game flow. Instead of an exchange of moves, players are often compelled to maintain aggressive pressure against Steve to prevent him from accumulating resources.

In simpler terms, having Steve’s equipment isn’t problematic on its own, but it’s incredibly powerful, even beyond the use of blocks. A single error can lead to a series of attacks from Steve, which often inflict damage amounting to 60% or more. This damage increases if Steve acquires a Diamond, essentially providing a means for him to recover. Additionally, Steve has the ability to manipulate the battlefield as he sees fit, compelling you to adjust your approach in ways that could potentially put you at risk.

2) Kazuya

In the game “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” Kazuya is often criticized for being excessively powerful. Players commonly refer to him as the “fatal-touch” character because he can end matches with a single string of attacks. This deadly efficiency comes from the high damage his moves inflict, their smooth transition into one another, and the impressive knockback they provide. Although learning Kazuya’s most effective combo sequences can be difficult, when executed properly, they can deplete stocks astonishingly fast.

By blending Kazuya’s weight and his ability to recover, matches tend to stretch out longer. A single misstep or missed attack could lead to a string of combos by Kazuya, potentially costing you one of your stocks. His Rage Drive exacerbates the situation as it amplifies Kazuya’s attacks, creating a comeback factor that makes it more challenging for you. Essentially, damaging Kazuya inadvertently provides him with an enhanced attack power and a greater edge in taking your stock.

3) Sonic

I’m a gamer here, and let me tell you, Sonic certainly shakes things up in the games we play. Despite some questionable decisions on move design, making many of his moves feel similar, Sonic definitely has his strengths. Being the fastest character in the game means I can control the tempo of a match, sometimes even to an extent that can be disadvantageous for the game itself. Some Sonic players, including me at times, have found it more effective to wear down opponents with time rather than aiming for all three stocks outright.

Apart from Sonic’s knack for forcing opponents into timeouts, his gameplay strategy often involves quick strikes followed by swift retreats, making it challenging for consequences to ensue. His bothersome Spin Dash and Homing Attack abilities only add to this control, allowing him to dominate the match quite effortlessly. This usually necessitates a cautious playstyle to avoid Sonic building an advantage that may lead him to run away and win the rest of the game.

4) Little Mac

In contrast to his reputation as one of the less effective characters in the game, classified often as a low-tier character, Little Mac compels players to adapt their strategies due to his distinctive advantages. These traits encompass the unusually long frames on numerous attacks he possesses and his super armor, which allows him to continue attacks uninterrupted despite taking damage. Remarkably, KO Punch functions almost like a ‘delete’ button, demanding players to prioritize safety when playing or risk losing a stock instantly.

If Nintendo were to modify some of Little Mac’s traits, making improvements on his weaknesses and reducing his overly powerful strengths, he could become a genuinely honest character. However, as it stands, many players don’t choose him because he isn’t very strong. But, encountering him in a match can still lead to a frustrating experience, whether you emerge victorious or not.

5) Simon & Richter Belmont

Other characters often categorized as ‘lower tier’, the Belmonts, offer an unexpected twist in gameplay. Unlike Little Mac who thrives on close-quarter combat, urging caution with his aggressive approach, the Belmonts prefer a more distant strategy. Equipped with three distinct ranged attacks, their goal is to maintain distance from their opponent. The length of their whip only intensifies this style, allowing them to attack at a distance. Even when an opponent closes in, a swift jab or neutral air attack can send you flying back, forcing another cautious approach.

Navigating through their projectiles on stage can be tricky and frustrating, but it gets even tougher when a Belmont knocks you off. You’ll have to find a way to get back on the stage, only to face them again. While Simon and Richter might choose to run away and accumulate health before striking the final blow, your best bet is to try and push them offstage because their recovery can be easily exploited.
