5 Years Ago, the Ultimate DC Movie Was Finally Released (And Fans Are Still Hoping for More)

On March 18, 2021, something unexpected happened: Zack Snyder’s original vision for Justice League was finally released on HBO Max and received a much more positive response. The four-hour film is filled with stunning visuals, exciting action, and a clear, understandable story. However, because it was intended as the midpoint of a planned five-movie arc, the ending left fans wanting more, especially since it strongly suggested the dark future seen in Batman’s Knightmare would come to pass. Similar to Thanos in the Marvel movies, the villain Darkseid was poised to wreak havoc on the world, and the story hinted at a massive conflict where heroes and villains would unite to defeat him.

With the five-year anniversary approaching, Snyder has been sharing photos on Instagram of the Justice League team – Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash. He’s also included some subtle hints in his captions, suggesting he might be planning a continuation of the story.

What Have Snyder’s Social Media Posts Said & Could We Ever Actually Get the Final Two Chapters of His Saga?

I remember when there was talk of Netflix buying Warner Bros. Discovery – so many DC fans, myself included, were desperately hoping they’d finish Zack Snyder’s five-movie plan! It didn’t happen, and honestly, even if Netflix had bought Warner Bros., I think it still would have been a long shot.

The first Justice League movie ended up costing a whopping $300 million after extensive reshoots. Even if the sequel, Justice League Part II, had a trouble-free production, a similar budget would be reasonable. It’s common for actors to demand higher salaries for each new film in a franchise.

Despite the fresh start with the new DC Universe, many fans still wish we had seen more of the previous cinematic vision. It’s hard to become invested in a series or movie only to have it end abruptly without a proper conclusion.

The big question is whether Snyder was subtly hinting at future plans. His recent social media posts ended with hopeful phrases like “looking toward what comes next” and “moving forward as one, toward destiny,” which have sparked a lot of discussion among fans. Some are trying to figure out if these phrases suggest upcoming announcements, are simply empty teases, or just reflect the imagery he shared – pictures of the team looking ahead or charging into battle together.

Let’s be realistic: the most likely path forward isn’t another big-budget movie. It’s simply captions explaining what’s happening in the existing film. However, there is a sensible way to continue Zack Snyder’s Justice League – through a comic book sequel. We probably won’t see two more $300 million films, but a comic book could effectively show fans what Snyder originally planned. He already had detailed ideas, and could easily work with DC to create two comic book series, each covering a planned movie.

The limited series Batman ’89, written by the screenwriter of the original Batman and Batman Returns, Sam Hamm, felt much more fulfilling for fans of Tim Burton’s films than Michael Keaton’s cameo in The Flash. While it didn’t completely make up for Tim Burton being replaced by Joel Schumacher, it at least offered a glimpse of what a third film directed by the creator of Edward Scissorhands might have been like.

Thankfully, we at least received a fixed version of the heavily edited theatrical release of this film. The original cut was a major letdown – a disorganized mess that hinted at a much better movie waiting to be created. Even if this is the only result, Zack Snyder’s Justice League proves that fan wishes can sometimes be fulfilled, and good things can happen when studios pay attention to their audience.
