5 Years On, Chris Nolan’s Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movie Just Became Impossible to Stream

A fantastic but often overlooked sci-fi film by Christopher Nolan has disappeared from streaming platforms. With so many people now watching movies and shows through streaming services, they’re giving up control over what they can watch. While some still prefer to buy DVDs and Blu-rays to own their favorite films, others depend on streaming services and have to wait for what’s available. This leaves viewers with a choice: pay for multiple subscriptions or accept that someone else is deciding what they get to watch.

Christopher Nolan’s 2021 science fiction film, Tenet, has disappeared from Netflix as of January 1st, and it’s currently not available on any other streaming platform. Usually, when a movie leaves Netflix, it quickly appears on another service like HBO Max, Hulu, or even free options like Tubi. This time, however, that hasn’t happened, leaving Tenet currently unstreamable.

Unlike some films, Tenet isn’t currently available on any streaming services. If you want to watch it, you’ll need to rent it from a platform like Amazon.

Tenet is Well Worth Watching, Even With Lackluster Reviews

Christopher Nolan is known for making critically acclaimed films. His 2023 movie, Oppenheimer, received a 93% rating from critics and 91% from audiences. Many of his other films are also highly rated: The Dark Knight (94%), Memento (93%), and even smaller projects like Insomnia (92%). Only three of his films have a critic score below 80%, including the often-overlooked The Prestige (77%) and the award-winning Interstellar (73%). His lowest-rated film is Tenet (70%), which also has his lowest audience score of 76%.

The film Tenet features a talented cast including John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, Elizabeth Debicki, and Dimple Kapadia. The plot is incredibly complex and difficult to follow, building on director Christopher Nolan’s fascination with time manipulation. While Nolan’s previous time-bending film, Inception, was well-received, audiences generally found Tenet confusing.

The story centers on a retired CIA operative who is hired by a clandestine group. They’ve invented a way to track objects as they move backward in time, and they’re using this technology to investigate an attack that originated in the future. While the premise is reminiscent of 12 Monkeys, this narrative is far more focused on the technical details of time travel and uses it as the primary driver of the complex plot.

Tenet is a complex and visually stunning film that many critics praised as a challenging, mind-bending experience for science fiction fans. Both John David Washington and Robert Pattinson delivered strong performances, and the movie showcased Nolan’s signature impressive visuals. While it gained a wider audience when it was available on streaming platforms, allowing viewers to fully appreciate its intricate plot, it’s now harder to watch since it’s no longer on Netflix, leaving limited options for those who don’t own or want to rent it.
