$506M Superhero Sequel Becomes A Massive Streaming Hit on Disney+ (& It’s Not In The MCU)

You know, when I think about Marvel on Disney+, I usually picture the new shows and movies that just finished playing in theaters. But get this – one of the biggest Marvel movies trending on there isn’t actually part of the MCU! Disney+ has a ton of Marvel stuff, not just the MCU. They’ve got older films from before the MCU started, plus everything they picked up when they bought Fox – like those classic X-Men and Fantastic Four movies. But surprisingly, they even have some of the Spider-Man universe movies from Sony, too!

It’s surprising to see that Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the second most-watched movie on Disney+ right now, according to FlixPatrol. Even more unexpected is that it’s one of only two Marvel films in the top ten – The Fantastic Four: First Steps is at number seven. Currently, the most popular movie on the platform is TRON: Ares, which didn’t perform well in cinemas but is finding a new audience through streaming.

Disney+’s list of most-watched titles isn’t limited to movies – popular series are included too. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is currently third, following the release of its Season 2 finale last week. The original Avatar is in sixth place, and Pixar’s Elio is tenth. Rounding out the Top 10 are Disney Handcrafted, The Princess and the Frog, Pole to Pole with Will Smith, and Minnie’s Bow-Toons: Pet Hotel.

Venom: The Last Dance Finds a Second Life on Streaming

Fans of Venom will be happy to hear that even though the sequels didn’t perform quite as well as the first film, they were still Sony’s most successful Marvel movies after they stopped making Spider-Man films and started focusing on characters like Venom. Venom: The Last Dance served as a final chapter for Venom and Eddie Brock, and while it earned a solid $478.9 million despite costing $110 million to make, it didn’t quite reach the heights of the original movie.

While Venom received generally negative reviews – scoring only 40% on Rotten Tomatoes – critical reception often doesn’t impact the success of these kinds of films. In fact, it performed better than other recent Sony Marvel movies like Madame Web (10%), Kraven the Hunter (15%), and Morbius (15%). Interestingly, audience scores differed: Madame Web received a 53% audience score, while Kraven (72%) and Morbius (71%) were better received by viewers. Venom: The Last Dance achieved a strong 79% audience score.

Movies that didn’t do well in theaters are finding new audiences on streaming services like Disney+, Netflix, and HBO Max. These platforms let viewers watch without the cost or hassle of going to a movie theater, and it looks like Venom: The Last Dance is finally getting the recognition it deserves.
