Horror movies have become incredibly popular, and that success is now extending to television. We’re seeing classic horror franchises like The Exorcist, Child’s Play, and Evil Dead adapted into TV series, and Stephen King’s work is constantly being turned into shows. Now, another famous horror franchise is joining the trend, with plans for both a new TV series and a follow-up movie.
Those previous marketing efforts succeeded with well-established horror franchises, but this one will be more challenging. Considering the series’ history, there’s no assurance it will work.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre Is Getting A TV Show (& New Movie)

A24, the independent film studio known for critically acclaimed movies, has secured the rights to create new content for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, including both films and television shows. Actor Glen Powell, famous for roles in Top Gun: Maverick and The Running Man, will serve as an executive producer on the franchise, working with Dan Cohen and their Barnstorm production company.
Glenn Powell shared in a statement that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a personal favorite. He believes the film was hugely influential on the horror genre and continues to represent his home state of Texas even after more than 50 years. Powell expressed his excitement that Barnstorm is involved in creating a new installment of this classic and beloved franchise.
Spooky Pictures and Image Nation are partnering to create a new series based on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, and several executives from both companies will be involved. Notably, Kim Henkel, who co-wrote the original movie, will be a producer through her production company, Exurbia Films, along with producers Ian Henkel and Pat Cassidy. JT Mollner, who recently adapted Stephen King’s The Long Walk into a film, will direct the TV series, but isn’t currently slated to work on any related movies.
I’ve always believed in leaving classic films untouched, and I consider the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre a perfect example of that. Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel made something truly groundbreaking and influential that still defines horror today. When the chance came to expand on that world in a longer format, I saw it as a way to both pay tribute to the original story and explore it in a new way. I’m thrilled to be working with A24 on this project – it’s a real honor.”
Powell said she couldn’t imagine a better team to bring this incredible property to life, working with A24, filmmaker JT Mollner, and a group of highly skilled producers.

I’ve become a huge fan of A24 – they’re really the new Miramax, willing to take chances on exciting and different filmmakers and projects, like they did with Euphoria on HBO. This year has been incredible for them! They’re getting recognized with awards like Golden Globes and Oscar nominations for films like Marty Supreme and The Smashing Machine, and they even smartly picked up the English dub for the huge international hit, Ne Zha 2, which made over $2.2 billion! Everything changed for them with Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022. That movie was a massive success – earning $143 million on a small budget and winning seven Oscars, including Best Picture! It makes sense they’re looking at expanding into bigger franchises now, but what’s great is they still have that indie reputation, so fans like me are optimistic that these new projects will stay true to the original vision, like Tobe Hooper’s films.
Despite all of this, Ryan Murphy’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story changed how people view the works inspired by the serial killer, including Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Considering several previous unsuccessful attempts to revive the franchise—a prequel in the 2000s, a 3D reboot and Leatherface origin story in the 2010s, and a legacy sequel in the early 2020s—the current team, led by Powell, faces significant challenges and has less creative freedom than they suggest. It remains to be seen how their new approach will fare.
As a huge horror fan, I was surprised to find there are actually nine Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies out there! If you’re as curious as I am about the latest one, let’s chat about it over on the ComicBook Forum – I’d love to hear your thoughts!
