James Cameron is thrilled with the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which appears to be another box office success for the popular franchise. While things are going incredibly well for the Avatar films, Cameron isn’t immediately jumping into the next one. He’s currently focusing on other projects he’s passionate about, including a film adaptation of The Last Train from Hiroshima, the true story of a man who survived both atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II. He’s also involved in developing a movie based on Joe Abercrombie’s fantasy novel The Devils, but only as a co-writer of the screenplay.
Even though Cameron has worked on many different projects, he’s still most passionate about science fiction. He started his career in the genre, directing the popular sequel Aliens and creating The Terminator series. He eventually wants to go back to his beginnings by remaking the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage.
In a recent interview with Pete Hammond for ScreenRant’s Behind the Lens video series, Cameron discussed when he believes progress will begin on the Fantastic Voyage project.
He mentioned his long-term project, Fantastic Voyage, and expressed optimism about starting it within the next year.
Cameron was careful to explain exactly what he’ll be doing on the project, wanting to avoid any misunderstandings about him directing or having a major creative role.
He said he’s producing a new project and is currently developing the script with a director. They plan to move forward with it.
Fantastic Voyage Has Been Trying to Get Back to the Big Screen for Decades

When Fantastic Voyage came out in 1966, it was praised for its groundbreaking special effects. The movie tells the story of a submarine crew who are shrunk down to incredibly small sizes and sent inside the body of a colleague who is critically ill. Their mission wasn’t easy, and they faced numerous challenges. However, the film wasn’t just about completing the mission; the journey itself was a major focus, inspiring many filmmakers over the years, including James Cameron, who revisited similar themes three decades later.
The remake of Fantastic Voyage has faced numerous challenges, with several attempts to develop a compelling story. Guillermo del Toro was once involved, but he left to focus on The Shape of Water. However, James Cameron remains committed to the project and is now collaborating with a new director, hoping to finally complete it. The identity of this new director hasn’t been revealed, but Cameron believes they’re the right person for the job.
