6 “Bad” Movies You Should Make Your Friends Watch

From time to time, I come across a movie that’s so off the mark it feels like a strikeout in a grand baseball game. Take for example “War of the Worlds” on Prime Video. On certain evenings, these flops become my favorite picks to watch with friends or a small group. Watching “Plan 9 from Outer Space” solo might make me chuckle at its lack of cinematic finesse, but in a group, it’s a different ball game altogether. We can laugh together, bounce ideas off each other, and even make fun of the movie like the characters in “Mystery Science Theater 3000”. This show has managed to stay relevant because it’s all about multiple personalities (one of them being a quirky robot) poking fun at less-than-stellar films. There’s nothing quite as entertaining as sharing a good laugh over a really bad movie, perhaps accompanied by a few shots of whiskey, if we’re old enough to indulge!

The following films narrowly failed to make the cut: Catwoman, Hobgoblins, Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2, and Mac and Me. Regarding the latter two, you could amuse an unassuming friend by sharing the “Garbage Day!” scene from YouTube or watching a specific Mac and Me scene with Paul Rudd trolling Conan O’Brien. Any one of the numerous instances where Rudd has done this would suffice.

6) Anaconda

In December, the classic film “Anaconda” is set to receive a fresh take, a revamping that’s causing quite a stir among fans of the original. While this new version promises excitement with Jack Black and Paul Rudd headlining the cast, it also raises concerns due to its comedic leanings suggested by the star-studded lineup. Unlike the original, which was more in the realm of traditional monster movies, complete with Jon Voight’s eccentric portrayal providing a few accidental laughs.

This film, contrary to receiving a Worst Picture Razzie nomination, truly merits recognition. Out of all contenders, it’s the only one that warrants a genuine defense. While the storytelling and creature design are commendable, there are some humorous aspects you might want to share with friends. For instance, watch for the waterfall that defies gravity by flowing backward, the unexpected appearance of a monkey in a snake’s mouth, Christopher Walken’s performance, and the beast’s ear-piercing screams (much like the shark in Jaws: The Revenge, snakes are incapable of such sounds).

5) The Avengers (1998)

1998’s version of “The Avengers” (adapted from the British TV show with the same title), despite being less than stellar, fails to diminish Ralph Fiennes’ acting skills. On the other hand, Sean Connery falls into the category of actors who didn’t shine in this particular role.

It appears as though Connery enjoys his villain role, yet it seems excessive. The fact that his henchmen are dressed like oversized teddy bears doesn’t improve the situation. This comedy-spy film believes it’s humorous, but it rarely succeeds in being so – and when it does try, it falls flat. What is amusing, however, is the notion that this concept would be successful, let alone to the extent that they invested $60 million (before accounting for marketing expenses).

4) Freddy Got Fingered

In simpler terms, the bizarre film “Freddy Got Fingered” is a production that seems to have sprung from an eccentric comedian’s mind, who unexpectedly gained popularity and was given control over a studio’s budget. However, this movie, which ultimately flopped, significantly impacted his career for the worse overnight.

he repeatedly stimulates a Pakistani elephant until it releases a massive amount of semen, causing his father to be blown away. This sort of sentence can either prompt you to round up your friends to watch it immediately or convince you that this is something you will never even consider watching, despite surviving for twenty-five years.

3) Howard the Duck

Fancy catching a Marvel flick? But just so you know, I’d like to suggest ‘Howard the Duck.’ Let’s settle down and get ready for it, either by popping the disc into the player, or clicking ‘rent’ – no further conversation until then.

This peculiar movie features duck breasts and the character who played the principal in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” delivering an eccentric villain role. Over the span of 111 minutes, it unfolds as a wild ride. The most puzzling aspect is that until 12 years later when “Blade” was released, this was the only film adaptation of a Marvel Comics character.

2) The Room

In a similar vein to Ed Wood, Tommy Wiseau displays an ardent affection for filmmaking yet seems utterly oblivious to the craft itself. His most recognized work is undeniably “The Room“, the creation of which was depicted in the 2017 film “The Disaster Artist“, featuring James and Dave Franco in leading roles.

This movie could be considered a must-watch for aspiring film students, not so much to learn how it should be done, but rather to grasp common mistakes in staging scenes, developing engaging characters, and directing performances. Interestingly enough, if they’re looking to master the art of delivering the line “Oh, hi Mark,” this movie offers a prime example for that.

The Room is not available for streaming.

1) Troll 2

Approximately a decade prior to the release of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” the initial story titled “Troll” featured Harry Potter as its main character. Remarkably coincidental as that may seem, it pales in comparison to the peculiarities found within “Troll 2.”

This film is a sequel that doesn’t share any connection with the original. Instead of featuring trolls, it introduces goblins (and a town named Nilbog, which is actually goblin spelled backwards). This movie might just be the most delightfully terrible ever created. Unlike many other bad films, this one isn’t a struggle to watch. Every choice made in its production lacks any connection to reality or common sense, and that only adds to its charm. Furthermore, “They’re eating her… and then they’re going to eat me… oh my Goddddd!” comes close to challenging the sarcasm and ironic acclaim found in The Room‘s script.

Here’s another attempt:

This sequel has no ties to its predecessor. Unlike other films featuring trolls, this one stars goblins (and a town called Nilbog, which is goblin spelled backwards). This movie stands out as a remarkably enjoyable yet horrible film. Many terrible movies can be a chore to sit through, but not this one. Every decision in its production lacks any semblance of realism or logic, and that only enhances its charm. Lastly, “They’re eating her… and then they’re going to eat me… oh my Goddddd!” comes dangerously close to overtaking the sarcastic, applause-worthy dialogue found in The Room‘s script.
