Insomniac Games has been creating popular titles since it was founded in 1994. Even their very first game, Disruptor, offered a fresh take on the first-person shooter genre. Since then, the studio has evolved significantly, exploring a wide range of game types – from charming platformers with dragons to big-budget Marvel adventures. Picking the best game from their impressive catalog is difficult, but a handful truly shine.
Here are Insomniac’s six best games.
6) Sunset Overdrive

Insomniac Games was already well-known for its high-quality PlayStation games even before Sony bought the company in 2019. That’s why the announcement of Sunset Overdrive came as such a shock. It marked a departure from the popular Ratchet & Clank series, and surprisingly, Insomniac was teaming up with Microsoft to create it.
Everyone involved benefited from Sunset Overdrive. The game’s fast-paced action and unique movement feel similar to Jet Set Radio, and Insomniac Games perfectly balanced the excitement with plenty of humor. While it’s unlikely we’ll see a sequel given the studio’s current focus, Sunset Overdrive remains a really enjoyable experience.
5) Spyro: Year of the Dragon

Year of the Dragon is the last of the original Spyro games (aside from the Spyro Reignited Trilogy remake, shown above), and many fans consider it the strongest entry in the series. Insomniac Games successfully combined the best elements from the previous two games, creating a truly polished and satisfying experience.
This 3D platformer is accessible to new players but still offers a good challenge for those looking for it. It’s visually appealing and keeps things interesting with different characters and minigames. While the camera can be a bit awkward, that was common for games of this type back in 2000.
4) Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal

Interestingly, Up Your Arsenal is the third game in the Ratchet & Clank series. It introduced Dr. Nefarious, a villain who quickly became a fan favorite, and also included online multiplayer for the very first time. This new multiplayer mode gave players a lot more to enjoy after finishing the game’s fantastic story mode.
Even if you weren’t interested in playing online, Up Your Arsenal was essential for PlayStation fans. It significantly improved the core gameplay with a variety of new weapons and extensive upgrade options, making it the most polished and enjoyable entry in the series up to that point. While it didn’t drastically change the formula, Up Your Arsenal perfected it for the PS2.
3) Resistance 3

Most modern gamers have forgotten about the Resistance series, which is a shame because the three games are all really good shooters. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I think Resistance 3 is the strongest of the three.
Resistance 3 isn’t your typical shooting game. It delivers genuine horror, with moments that are truly frightening and intense. By moving away from a purely military focus and embracing a post-apocalyptic horror setting, it feels distinct from earlier games in the series. While it might not be the best shooter of its time, it’s definitely worth experiencing.
2) Marvel’s Spider-Man

The success of Marvel’s Spider-Man was a major factor in Sony’s decision to buy Insomniac Games in 2019. Released in 2018, Spider-Man was a huge hit on the PlayStation 4, and Sony wanted to secure the talented team at Insomniac by bringing them under the PlayStation umbrella.
In my opinion, the original Spider-Man game remains the strongest of the three. Miles Morales is enjoyable, but feels a bit brief, and the second game had some plot issues that bothered me. That said, no other series lets you move around a city as well. Swinging through New York is fantastic, and the combat, which is similar to Batman: Arkham, is consistently fun.
1) Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time

A Crack in Time is the third game in the Ratchet & Clank Future series. It seems Insomniac Games consistently delivers a fantastic third installment in their game series, which is a promising sign if they announce another Spider-Man game after they finish developing Marvel’s Wolverine.
While A Crack in Time doesn’t really break new ground for the series, it’s the most refined and polished Ratchet & Clank game to date. It looks and sounds fantastic, and the action is better than ever. It’s the best game in the Ratchet & Clank series, and even though Marvel’s Spider-Man is excellent, this game still takes the top spot.
