The 2000s were a fantastic decade for sports games. Back then, players had a lot more variety than they do today. It wasn’t just annual updates to realistic simulations – fun, arcade-style sports games were common too. Plus, different companies competed to create the best games, focusing on quality rather than just securing licenses with big budgets. It was a golden age for sports gamers, and these six games really stood out as the most memorable titles of that era.
Here are the decade-defining sports games for the 2000s.
6) Backyard Baseball 2001

Before you mention MVP 2005 in the comments, let me assure you, I understand its appeal. It’s truly the defining baseball game of the 2000s – I actually still enjoy some of its features more than those in modern MLB The Show games. But when we talk about sports games from that era, we can’t forget the Backyard Sports series.
Humongous Entertainment introduced many kids to video games, and Backyard Baseball 2001 was a key moment for them. It was the first game in the series to feature child versions of real baseball players, letting young fans easily play as their heroes. While the game is fairly simple, that’s because it was designed for elementary school kids.
5) NHL Hitz 20-03

Midway is famous for arcade classics like NFL Blitz and NBA Jam. But since those games came out in the 1990s, they don’t quite fit our criteria. Still, we wanted to include a great Midway arcade title, and NHL Hitz is arguably just as good – if not better – than those other two.
There’s a unique appeal to how hockey seamlessly transitions from its intense, high-speed gameplay to actual fighting. The NHL is the only major sports league where players can physically fight it out, which made it a natural fit for the style of Midway’s arcade games. While games like MLB Slugfest and RedCard were also fun, they didn’t capture that same connection.
4) Fight Night Round 3

It’s tough to pick the best boxing game – both Fight Night Round 2 and Round 3 are excellent. However, I’m choosing Round 3 because it simply looks and feels more polished. While earlier games let you turn off the heads-up display, Round 3 made that the default, which immediately created a more immersive and exciting “big fight” atmosphere.
The addition of “Impact Punches” adds a fresh feel to the gameplay, and the ESPN Classic fights let you experience iconic boxing matches with legendary athletes. While UFC now dominates the combat sports world, back in 2006, Fight Night Round 3 was the most popular boxing game.
3) Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3

It’s understandable if you’d choose Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 as one of the best games of the decade – it’s a close call! However, I slightly prefer THPS 3. Its levels, spanning from Canada to Tokyo, are the most consistently strong in any Tony Hawk game, and the ‘revert’ move really expanded the possibilities for creating incredible combos.
Both Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 and 3 deserve a spot on any list of great games. The Tony Hawk series revolutionized extreme sports gaming, consistently earning high praise and selling very well. While Activision eventually lost steam with the franchise, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 represented the peak of the series’ success.
2) Madden 2005/ ESPN NFL 2K5

As a huge football fan, I remember how intense the competition between NFL 2K and Madden was. It really pushed Electronic Arts to secure the exclusive NFL license! NFL 2K5 was seriously amazing – it was half the price of Madden that year, but packed with so much more! The gameplay was top-notch, and they had these incredible features like a simulated SportsCenter to recap your season. You could even play in first-person, and it wasn’t just about football – you could build a house and play against celebrities like Steve-O and Carmen Electra! It was just a way more fun and innovative experience.
EA didn’t let those criticisms go unanswered. Michael Vick’s incredible running ability had essentially made Madden 04 too easy to play on offense, so the developers focused on improving the defense. Madden 05 introduced the Hit Stick, which allowed defensive players to make truly impactful tackles for the first time. It was also the first Madden game to include Xbox Live, significantly improving the online experience.
The 2000s were a golden age for sports gamers because EA and 2K were fiercely competing to create the best games. Unfortunately, EA acquired exclusive rights to the NFL, effectively ending 2K’s involvement. While this made EA very profitable, it ultimately hurt players by removing that healthy competition.
1) NBA Street Vol. 2

The competition between Madden 2005 and NFL 2K5 embodies the exciting rivalries that defined classic sports games, while NBA Street Vol. 2 demonstrates what happens when developers are willing to be innovative. Arcade basketball isn’t new – NBA Jam debuted way back in 1993! – but NBA Street offered something completely fresh and different.
The NBA Street games weren’t just about playing basketball—they captured the energy and style surrounding the sport. They let players show off their personalities in completely new ways. Are you a serious, reliable shooter? Lace up your Chuck Taylors and get to work. Want to humiliate your opponent with amazing ball-handling? Let me tell you about Biggie Little, he’s a legend.
Vol. 2 offers incredible gameplay and is a true celebration of skateboarding culture. The music is still fantastic, and the game modes are perfectly designed – many consider it the greatest sports game of all time. While licensing issues continue to be a hurdle, it’s disappointing that EA hasn’t revisited this classic title.
