As a movie fan, I’m already getting really excited about 2026! It looks like it’s going to be a fantastic year for film. We’ve got a ton of interesting projects on the way, with some big stars and directors involved, plus new installments in franchises I already love. While there’s a little bit of everything coming out, I’m especially hyped for the sci-fi movies. What’s really got me excited is that a lot of them are building on existing stories and universes – it’s great to see continuities being expanded with established fan bases.
2026 looks like it will be a fantastic year for science fiction fans. Several highly anticipated sequels are scheduled to come out then, promising a lot of exciting stories. Based on how good the previous movies were, these sequels are likely to be hits.
6) The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping
The Hunger Games movies have been a huge success story for 21st-century cinema. While the original series focusing on Katniss Everdeen has finished, the franchise continues with prequel films. A new movie, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, has already been released, and another, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, is scheduled for 2026. This upcoming film will focus on the early life of the popular character Haymitch. Given the success of all the previous films, Sunrise on the Reaping is likely to be a top sci-fi release in 2026.
5) Supergirl
Superhero movies are incredibly popular now, and it’s easy to overlook their origins in science fiction. However, the story of Superman remains firmly rooted in the sci-fi genre, centering on a powerful alien from Krypton who becomes Earth’s hero. The first film in the new DCU, launching in 2025, will be followed by a sci-fi sequel in 2026. The Supergirl movie, scheduled for release on June 26th, aims to build upon the DCU and explore a memorable character from the 2025 film, making it a much-awaited release.
4) The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Following the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, fans are eagerly anticipating its 2026 sequel. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be based on the popular game of the same name, and will introduce some science fiction themes to the familiar fantasy world. While not a traditional sci-fi story, the sequel’s plot, which involves traveling to different worlds, touches on science fiction concepts, making it one of the most anticipated releases of 2026.
3) Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu
Sci-fi sequels don’t always come straight after a movie release. The upcoming film, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, will continue the story from the The Mandalorian TV series, and also acts as a sequel to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi because of where it fits in the Star Wars timeline. The trailer has already generated a lot of excitement, establishing the movie as one of the most anticipated sci-fi films, especially given its connection to such a popular and well-known franchise. It’s set to release in 2026.
2) Avengers: Doomsday
Without a doubt, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a major event in 2026. It’s the first of two films that will wrap up the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, promising a huge, mind-bending story full of the best science fiction the franchise has to offer. Even just the cast list makes Avengers: Doomsday one of the most anticipated movies of 2026, and its focus on sci-fi is a big reason why.
1) Dune: Part Three
The first two Dune movies are among Denis Villeneuve’s most acclaimed works, and anticipation is already building for the third installment. Villeneuve’s adaptations of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel are being hailed as some of the best science fiction films in years, leading many to predict that Dune: Part Three will be a top movie of 2026. The film will continue Paul Atreides’ story and feature returning stars from the previous films, making it the most anticipated sci-fi sequel of 2026.
