Stephen Colbert is helping to write a new Lord of the Rings movie that acts as both a sequel and a revisit to the original The Fellowship of the Ring. Currently called The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, the film will show six chapters that were left out of Peter Jackson’s movies. These scenes will be told from the perspectives of Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Sam’s daughter, Elanor, after the events of The Return of the King.
The chapters that were cut from the theatrical release aren’t essential to the main story – that’s why Peter Jackson removed them to shorten the film. However, they do introduce characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s books who didn’t make it into the movies, and include a dramatic encounter with a Barrow-wight. While the new Lord of the Rings movie is already sparking debate, a positive outcome could be seeing these previously excluded characters integrated into Warner Bros.’ ongoing film series. Although some of these characters have minor roles, others are important to Frodo’s journey, even though they were left out of the films.
6) Tolman “Tom” Cotton

Tom Cotton, a helpful character in Tolkien’s book and participant in the Battle of Bywater, isn’t featured in the Lord of the Rings movies, and we only learn he marries Sam’s daughter. It’s unfortunate he’s missing from the films. While Colbert’s movie doesn’t currently include him, the focus on Sam’s family opens the possibility of seeing or hearing about Tom through his granddaughter in future installments. However, he’s unlikely to be a major character, placing him low on the list of potential appearances.
5) Farmer Maggot

While Farmer Maggot appears in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, his part is smaller. The upcoming movie directed by Colbert will feature him more prominently, showing Frodo, Sam, and Pippin having dinner at his house – a scene from the book. He’ll also help them get to the Bucklebury Ferry. Although not a major character, he’s a helpful friend to the hobbits early on, and this version will portray him as more sympathetic than before.
4) Goldberry

In the sections of The Fellowship of the Ring that the upcoming movie will cover, the hobbits find refuge with Tom Bombadil and his wife, Goldberry. These characters weren’t included in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, but they did appear in Season 2 of The Rings of Power in 2024. Now, they’re set to be part of the new Warner Bros. films. Both characters are enigmatic, offering the movie a chance to explore their stories, and they provide Frodo and his companions with much-needed help. While Goldberry has a supporting role, Tom Bombadil will likely be a more prominent character. This movie offers a chance for Tom Bombadil to really stand out, though Goldberry’s part might not be as significant. It will be fascinating to see how the filmmakers portray these unique characters.
3) Fredegar “Fatty” Bolger

Everyone remembers Sam, Merry, and Pippin’s unwavering support of Frodo in The Lord of the Rings, but many movie viewers forget about another close friend: Fatty Bolger. He’s part of the group at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring, though his role in the film is very brief. Like Sam, Merry, and Pippin, Fatty knows what Frodo is trying to do, and he shows his loyalty by choosing to stay behind and offer support from home.
Frodo sells his home, Bag End, and buys a new one to make it look like he hasn’t left the Shire. This helps him keep his journey a secret. While Frodo and most of the hobbits depart, Fatty Bolger stays behind at Crickhollow to maintain Bag End, creating the illusion that Frodo still lives there. This is a crucial, yet often missed, detail in the films. Even in the proposed Colbert movie, Fatty won’t have a large role, but he’s still a fairly important character – ranking somewhere in the middle to upper tier of importance.
2) The Barrow-wight

The central conflict in Colbert’s film will likely be the kidnapping of Frodo and his companions by a Barrow-wight – a ghostly creature not featured in previous adaptations. While Tolkien doesn’t provide much background on the Barrow-wight in The Fellowship of the Ring, it will serve as the primary villain in The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. Unless new challenges are introduced, this creature will be the main obstacle the characters must overcome, making it a key figure in this film, even if its impact on the overall story is limited. The only character more important will be the one who defeats the Barrow-wight and guides the hobbits back on course repeatedly.
1) Tom Bombadil

Tom Bombadil is set to be a central figure in the new film, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, marking his debut on the big screen. A famously enigmatic character from Tolkien’s work, Tom helps the hobbits early in their adventure, most notably rescuing them from the Barrow-wight – essentially making him the hero of that part of the story. His assistance is also crucial to the quest to destroy the One Ring, as Frodo likely wouldn’t have gotten far without him. While Tom Bombadil appeared in The Rings of Power, it will be fascinating to see how director Colbert portrays this unique character in the new film.
