6 Expanse Episodes With 10/10 Space Battles

The SyFy series The Expanse was a groundbreaking television show that redefined science fiction. Based on the novels by James S.A. Corey, it presented a fresh take on the genre. Over six seasons, the show realistically depicted the adventures of the Rocinante’s crew as they navigated a complex world in space.

In a realistic future where humans have colonized Mars and the Asteroid Belt using advanced spacecraft, ice hauler James Holden unexpectedly finds himself at the center of a massive conspiracy with Solar System-wide implications. Alongside his crew, Holden battles against a powerful and controlling system, often engaging in thrilling and believable space combat. The Expanse is known for its captivating world and some of the most exciting, realistic space battles ever depicted.

The Fall of the Donnager Heightened the Stakes in The Expanse

James Holden began his career as a simple ice hauler with limited combat experience from his time in the UN Navy. Everything changed when the Canterbury was destroyed by a powerful, hidden attack. Holden first believed the attack came from Mars, but after joining the Martian warship Donnager, he and his crew realized something else was responsible. The Donnager itself was then attacked by stealth ships, forcing everyone into a desperate fight for survival.

The Donnager engaged the strange ships in a fierce, close-range fight, deploying its rail guns – weapons that fired highly accurate, magnetically propelled projectiles. Despite this effort, the enemy boarded the ship, forcing Holden’s crew to flee in a gunship. This event was a key experience for the future Rocinante crew, shaping them into the cohesive team they would eventually become.

The Rocinate Hit Hard Following the Eros Incident

At the conclusion of the first season, the crew of the Rocinante discovered why the Canterbury was destroyed. Scientists found a strange, powerful substance called a protomolecule, and recklessly experimented with it on the Belter population of a space station. This resulted in the agonizing deaths of thousands of people. Learning this, the Rocinante intervened, joining forces with Fred Johnson and his team from the Outer Planets Alliance to attack the Spin Station, where the protomolecule’s effects were being studied on Eros.

As Belter boarding parties approached the station, the Rocinante destroyed the stealth ship guarding it. Despite being a gunship, the Rocinante suffered hull damage from enemy railguns. During intense maneuvering, Amos risked his life to repair a critical thruster. The pressure mounted when Holden, Fred, and Miller landed, determined to confront the dangerous Dr. Dresden, who offered only flimsy justifications for his horrific actions. The entire encounter was a realistic and gripping depiction of a space battle.

Bobbie and Avasarala Try to Stay Alive in a Racing Ship

Okay, so after watching the UN practically beg for a war for seasons, I was so relieved to see Chrisjen Avasarala finally doing the right thing! It was crazy when Errinwright tried to take her out, but thankfully she and Bobbie Draper, the Martian Marine, managed to get away. And the way they escaped… talk about stressful! They were in this ship with absolutely no weapons or protection – their only hope was just to go fast. It really ratcheted up the tension, let me tell you.

Adding to the difficulty, Avasarala’s age presented a serious risk. The intense G-forces could cause a stroke for anyone, but she was particularly vulnerable. Bobbie was forced to balance dodging incoming attacks with slowing down to keep Avasarala alive. This flight highlighted a well-known pair facing a tremendously stressful situation.

The Ganymede Incident Showed the Dangers of the Protomolecule

I remember hearing about this incredible story involving Bobbie and her Marine team. They were stationed on Ganymede, holding a defensive position, when a group of UN Marines suddenly appeared, heading right for them. Technically, Bobbie’s team, the MCRN, was authorized to open fire if those UN Marines crossed a certain line. It was a tense situation! Later, we found out they weren’t charging at us, they were actually running away from something – something really bad. It was a huge misunderstanding, and a really scary moment for everyone involved.

The events on Ganymede stemmed from experiments conducted on Eros. Scientists working with a strange substance called the protomolecule created a dangerous, mutated hybrid. Simultaneously, Marines battled for survival on the planet’s surface while the Overwatch ship came under attack, creating a conflict on multiple fronts.

The Roci Had the Cards Stacked Against Them When Facing the Free Navy

By the end of Season 5, Holden was prepared to risk everything, even his own life. He and his small crew fought bravely in the Rocinante, buying Alex time to rescue Naomi. Holden knew this mission was incredibly dangerous and fully accepted he might not make it out alive.

Holden narrowly survived a dangerous encounter with Marco and three pirate ships led by Drummer. The battle also caused tension within Drummer’s crew, ultimately leading her to remove Karal, a divisive member. Holden escaped with his life and is ready for the next challenge.

The Roci Proves Its Worth Against Marco

Marco and his Free Navy ships, including the Pella, Lauber, and Granicus, attacked the Rocinante near Ceres, seeing a chance to strike at Holden’s group. The Rocinante’s crew responded with their rail gun and clever tactics.

Watching the Rocinate fight was intense! Even though Marco had a more powerful ship, the Rocinate was surprisingly effective – it moved so fast and realistically in the battle. It was frustrating to see how limited Marco’s railgun was, constantly needing to turn around to fire again, which really gave the Rocinate an edge. The stakes got even higher when Holden bravely managed to stop a missile that could have hurt Naomi’s son, Filip. Honestly, it was amazing to watch the whole crew pull together and win a fight that should have been a total win for Marco and the OPA.
