Some video games are truly exceptional, yet additional downloadable material can elevate them even further. These add-ons often enrich the gameplay experience and bring closure to a storyline. Games like “BioShock Infinite,” “Red Dead Redemption,” “Cyberpunk 2077,” “The Last of Us,” “Fallout 4,” “Skyrim,” “Elden Ring,” and “Bloodborne” are prime examples of this, as their expansions significantly altered the overall experience. However, it’s also important to note that not every game benefits from downloadable content. Some games stand strong on their own, with no need for additional material.
The games listed below could have been significantly enhanced with additional material beyond the original or main game content.
6) Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
The initial Spider-Man game developed by Insomniac, known as Spider-Man, featured a significant expansion pack called The City That Never Sleeps. However, following the conclusion of the game, it appeared that Spider-Man 2 might be planning additional downloadable content (DLC), but this never materialized. The Carnage storyline, along with numerous other minor narrative threads, remained unresolved. While the game stands well on its own, many players express a desire for more upon reaching the end credits due to its shorter length.
Regrettably, apart from gathering various things, there seemed to be nothing else to engage in except for swooping down to thwart occasional acts of lawlessness.
5) Red Dead Redemption 2
The original Red Dead Redemption was enhanced with an exceptional expansion pack titled Undead Nightmare. Throughout the game, players were battling classic Old West adversaries only to find themselves facing zombies in a unique twist as John Marston. Regrettably, Rockstar Games failed to incorporate any additional content into Red Dead Redemption 2, considered by many to be the best game ever made. Although the prequel was already flawless and didn’t require further enhancement, players yearned for extra content for their cherished character, Arthur Morgan. The absence of DLC was a missed opportunity for revenue generation, but it seems Rockstar had its reasons for not pursuing this option.
4) Tears of the Kingdom
Players found that the new additions to the sky and depths in “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” fell short of expectations. If additional content had been added as DLC for exploration, it would have been well-received. The DLC for “Breath of the Wild,” titled The Master Trials and The Champions’ Ballad, were successful, but Nintendo chose to shift focus away from “Tears of the Kingdom” immediately.
3) Echoes of Wisdom
Perhaps the reason for this could be that by 2024, Nintendo was preparing to release a new Zelda title named “Echoes of Wisdom”, which seemed to lack additional content via DLC, similar to their previous game, “Tears of the Kingdom”. Despite having vast potential for expansion due to its rich world creation, as evident in Princess Zelda’s realm, Nintendo opted not to release any extra content for this game either.
Upon overcoming the final boss, there are certain activities available. However, it’s regrettable that an additional story wasn’t included specifically for Zelda’s sole mainline appearance as the lead character within her own series.
2) Mario Kart World
The game titled “Mario Kart World” is relatively new, having been released just in early June. Notably, it serves as the sequel to the popular game “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe“, which boasts numerous downloadable content and expansions. Furthermore, the launch of “Donkey Kong Bananza” in July presented an ideal chance for additional content, such as a racing track (as “Donkey Kong Bananza” features a racing section) or new characters/outfits.
In this game, only Pauline and Donkey Kong appear as characters, but neither Diddy nor Dixie Kong are present. This lack of variety is considered a significant oversight, and it raises concerns about the direction things might take in the future.
1) Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Arceus, released recently, is widely regarded as one of the best Pokémon games in the past ten years. Despite its exceptional quality and potential for additional content, it didn’t receive any Downloadable Content (DLC). Interestingly, two other games, Pokémon Sword and Shield, along with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which are generally considered less impressive than Arceus, did receive DLC.
It’s worth noting that Pokémon games sometimes offer additional content, yet when a game is already exceptional, it might not require any further additions. In this context, Legends: Arceus didn’t necessarily need more features, but given the game’s high quality and considering it’s been a while since we’ve had a standout Pokémon title, players were still owed an exceptional gaming experience.
