6 Hardest GameCube Levels Ever

When Nintendo first started making consoles, their games were known for being incredibly challenging – so much so that players started calling them “Nintendo Hard” during the NES and SNES years. With the GameCube, Nintendo began to create more accessible, family-friendly games. However, even on the GameCube, some titles remained quite difficult, with certain levels designed to really test players’ skills.

Here are the six hardest levels on the Nintendo GameCube.

6) The Magnificent Five – Viewtiful Joe

Viewtiful Joe is a visually exciting and creative action game made by Capcom. While it’s a lot of fun, it’s also notoriously challenging, especially when facing its tough bosses. For players seeking an even greater test, there’s an ‘Ultra V-Rated’ difficulty setting that ramps up the challenge.

Episode 5, titled “The Magnificent 5,” really tests your skills with a long series of boss battles. It’s especially challenging on harder difficulties. You’ll face many of the game’s toughest bosses, and it all leads to a final showdown with Fire Leo, who is a particularly difficult opponent. Just getting to him after fighting through so many bosses makes this level stand out as one of the hardest.

5) Master 3 – Super Monkey Ball

Super Monkey Ball is a really challenging game, and it takes a lot of practice – likely dozens of hours – to get good at controlling the monkeys. I think the hardest level in the original game is Master 3. While there are some tricks to make it easier, playing it legitimately is a serious grind.

This game features incredibly narrow paths, and while the moving platforms aren’t fast or unpredictable, they make it surprisingly difficult to progress. They interfere with the camera, making precise movements nearly impossible. Most players will find it’s much easier to simply learn how to skip past them.

4) Chapter 4 – Ikaruga

Ikaruga is a challenging shoot ’em up game. While many levels are difficult, I think Chapter 4: The Test is the hardest of them all, even more so than Chapter 3: The Faith and Chapter 5: The Metempsychosis.

Success is incredibly difficult to achieve, as you’re navigating narrow spaces packed with enemies constantly firing at you. There’s barely any room to move and avoid getting hit, making your initial attempts really challenging. But with practice, you’ll learn how to overcome these obstacles and progress much more easily.

3) Prisoners of the Maw – Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader

Rogue Leader was a visually stunning GameCube game, boasting incredibly realistic Star Wars ships for its time. It also felt fantastic to play, allowing fans to experience iconic moments from the beloved franchise. However, some levels were surprisingly challenging.

Prisoners of the Maw is widely considered the best Star Wars: Rogue Squadron mission. You pilot a Y-Wing, which is tougher than an X-Wing, but much slower. This makes dodging asteroids and rescuing prisoners from the Imperial prison particularly challenging, especially since the asteroid field severely limits your visibility.

2) Cylinders – Super Monkey Ball 2

The level ‘Cylinders’ in Super Monkey Ball 2 is surprisingly easy if you use a skip, much like ‘Master 3’ in the original game. But if you try to complete it legitimately, it’s one of the hardest levels in the series. It’s also the third Master stage in SMB2, which might be intentional – the developers seem to favor the number three.

This section includes several small cylinders that spin around. It’s really tricky because you need to time your movements carefully to get past them while also staying balanced on top. You can use a bounce to skip the hardest parts, but most players will likely fail many times before they get the hang of the timing and precision needed to succeed.

1) Slim-Line Slits – F-Zero GX

For many GameCube enthusiasts, F-Zero GX is notoriously the most challenging game on the console. Nintendo really pushed the limits with the difficulty in this incredibly fast-paced racing game. If you found the 150cc mode in Mario Kart: Double Dash difficult, GX will be a whole new level of challenge – it’s far faster and more demanding.

Deciding which level is the most difficult in F-Zero GX is tricky. While several are challenging, I’d pick Slim-Line Slits in Master GP. The track itself isn’t overly complicated, but the other racers constantly try to force you off the very narrow paths, often ending your race prematurely. To make things worse, the level ends with a sharp corner that’s nearly impossible to take as quickly as the computer opponents. It feels like one final, unfair advantage for the AI, meaning you have to play flawlessly leading up to it.
