The Atari 2600 was a pioneering home video game console and one of the first to achieve widespread popularity. It played a key role in making video games a major form of entertainment in the 1970s. While some decisions eventually contributed to the video game crash of the 1980s, the Atari 2600 was hugely successful for several years. During its peak, game developers eagerly created titles for the system, and many of those games were notoriously difficult – some would even say as challenging as those on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Here are the six hardest Atari 2600 games ever.
6) Dodge ‘Em

Similar to other games here, Dodge ‘Em is fairly easy to pick up and play at first. It’s a driving game where you navigate a map, dodging traffic from other cars. While you drive around, you collect items scattered across a maze-like highway, which feels a bit like playing Pac-Man.
It’s fairly easy to get through the early levels once you understand how the game works. However, things become much harder when more computer-controlled cars appear. While it’s possible to learn the game through trial and error, many players find the learning curve in Dodge ‘Em to be quite frustrating.
5) Swordquest

Swordquest was a set of action-adventure games created alongside a contest for fans. Each game included a comic book that told the story and offered a clue to a bigger puzzle. Solving the puzzle could win players a valuable, real-world prize worth thousands of dollars.
These days, Swordquest isn’t very challenging because strategy guides are readily available. But if you try to solve the puzzles and mysteries without any help, you’ll likely get stuck for a long time. It had an interesting concept and a cool prize, but it wasn’t really a game you could just sit back and enjoy for a relaxing weekend.
4) Kaboom!

Okay, so I’ve been playing this game called Kaboom, and it’s pretty straightforward. Basically, a crazy bomber is chucking bombs down from above, and I have to use a bucket to catch them before they blow up. It doesn’t have a ton of complexity, so you can imagine things get harder quickly as more bombs start falling!
If you figured out the bomber drops bombs more quickly, you’re right! On harder levels, you’ll really need to be skilled. The bombs come down faster and there are more of them, all while your bucket to catch them gets smaller. Kaboom starts off easy, helping you learn the ropes, but it quickly gets very challenging, and you might miss the simpler early stages.
3) Double Dragon

Double Dragon is probably the most unusual game here. Considering the Atari 2600 first launched in 1977, bringing Double Dragon to it in 1989 was strange – that’s a full 12 years later! It’s hard to say why anyone thought this version was a good idea.
This version of the game is unfortunately quite rough and feels very basic. Looking at screenshots, you might not even recognize it as a Double Dragon port. It’s difficult to successfully land attacks because enemies attack relentlessly. While mastering the timing of the backward elbow could give you an edge, you’re better off playing a different version of this otherwise excellent game.
2) Jr. Pac-Man

Jr. Pac-Man plays a lot like the classic Pac-Man games. However, it’s noticeably harder. The levels are twice the size, making it tough to follow the ghosts, and the game itself is much faster-paced.
To make things even harder, the Ghosts are much more relentless in their pursuit. When all four are chasing you, it feels like being hunted by a smart and coordinated wolf pack. They work together, knowing when to swarm and when to separate, to corner you in a trap.
1) Gravitar

Gravitar is a fast-paced shooter that can be really challenging. Skilled players might make it look easy, but mastering the game requires a steady hand and precise control. You pilot a small spacecraft across 12 planets, dodging attacks and trying to survive.
If you crash into anything or get hit by an enemy laser, you’ll lose a life. Beat all the levels, and you’ll move to a new universe where gravity works in reverse – pushing you away from the planet. The third universe is even trickier: the ground is invisible. The key to success is to play carefully and hope you get lucky!
