6 Most Difficult Master System Games Ever Made

The Sega Master System launched in 1985 as a rival to the popular Nintendo Entertainment System. Though Sega wasn’t yet a major global competitor, the Master System found success in certain regions, particularly Europe. While Nintendo games were often quite difficult, some Master System titles were just as challenging, which frustrated younger players. This makes sense, considering many of these games were originally very hard arcade games, and Sega didn’t hold back on the difficulty.

Here are the six hardest games on the Sega Master System.

6) Action Fighter

I just played Action Fighter, and it’s a blast! You’re racing a superbike on a crazy highway packed with enemies. What’s really cool is that as you get better, you unlock different vehicles – I went from a bike to a jet and even a Formula One car! It’s a fun concept, and it generally works well, but be warned – you’re going to crash… a lot.

What makes Action Fighter so challenging is its incredibly fast pace. You’ll need quick reflexes to overcome most obstacles, and as the game throws more enemies and turrets at you, it quickly becomes one of the most difficult bullet-hell games available for the Master System.

5) OutRun

The Master System version of OutRun was highly acclaimed for faithfully recreating the arcade experience – it was the best port available at the time. While the 16-bit versions were even better, the Master System release was a significant achievement and a real treat for players then.

OutRun is a really challenging game that combines high speed with sharp turns. It takes skill to navigate those turns, and if you don’t learn them, you’ll struggle to progress. Once you do, the game becomes much easier, but it has a steep learning curve for beginners.

4) Kenseiden

Kenseiden is a unique game. While the main side-scrolling part isn’t very hard, it’s enjoyable thanks to its smooth action and beautiful graphics, which really draw you in. There are some challenging puzzles, but they aren’t overly difficult.

The optional training missions are really difficult because they overwhelm you with enemies. The slow movement speed of your character isn’t a big deal during the main game, but it makes these missions very frustrating. Luckily, completing them isn’t necessary – they’re just for players who want an extra challenge.

3) Black Belt

Black Belt is an action game where you fight waves of enemies by moving from side to side. Interestingly, it’s based on a Japanese game called Hokuto no Ken, which itself was inspired by the popular manga series Fist of the North Star. While the gameplay is straightforward, facing constant streams of opponents can become repetitive.

The game tries to spice things up with occasional mini-bosses, but you might get bored before you even reach them. When you do face a boss, expect a tough fight. The early bosses are doable, but the Oni in Chapter 4 is a real roadblock. He’s incredibly hard to defeat, and many players couldn’t figure out his weakness without help. The game continues to get more challenging through the three chapters that follow.

2) Choplifter

There’s a helpful trick in Choplifter that makes it much easier if you know how to do it. On some of the harder levels of this helicopter game, you can fly backwards. This prevents certain enemy attacks from appearing, making those stages significantly simpler.

Without knowing a specific trick, Choplifter can be incredibly challenging, particularly in the Cave level. While flying a helicopter into a cave would be tough in reality, navigating that level demands such precise control that many players struggle, especially with the Master System’s imprecise D-pad. It’s a decent game overall, but that Cave level is frustrating enough to make you want to delete it.

1) Penguin Land

Penguin Land is a charming and simple puzzle game, making it a great choice for younger players. It’s the kind of game a parent might instantly buy for a child around nine years old if they saw it in a store.

You might have just given your child a really challenging game for the Master System! It begins with easy puzzles, but quickly becomes quite difficult. Plus, you’re racing against the clock because a pesky vulture will eliminate you if you take too long to solve them. It’s a surprisingly tough game disguised with adorable graphics, making Penguin Land a strong contender for the most difficult game on this list.
