6 RPGs That Desperately Need a Remake

Following the successful remakes of RPGs like Final Fantasy VII, game developers are increasingly thinking about updating their older titles. Remakes can tap into players’ nostalgia and boost sales, and they can also be a good way to utilize resources while waiting for the release of bigger games. Here’s a list of six role-playing games that would benefit from a remake – either because they could use some improvements or are currently only available on outdated systems. These games are all strong candidates for a modern update.

Here are six RPGs that should get a remake.

6) Parasite Eve

As a big fan, I really hope we see a remake of Parasite Eve! It’s a Square Enix game, and they’ve been doing so many great remakes and remasters lately. Plus, it’s often described as Square’s take on Resident Evil, and look how well those remakes have been doing! It feels like Parasite Eve could be just as successful if they gave it the same treatment.

The main reason a remake of Parasite Eve would be great is simply that the original game is hard to find. While it was briefly available to download on the PS3 and included with the Japanese PlayStation Classic, more people deserve to experience Square’s first game rated for mature audiences.

5) The Legend of Dragoon

I remember when The Legend of Dragoon came out for the PlayStation back in 1999. It was pretty clear Sony was trying to compete with the huge success of Final Fantasy – they wanted a piece of that pie! Honestly, though, it didn’t quite hit the mark. Reviews were okay, but it didn’t get the amazing reception everyone was hoping for.

The original PlayStation version was beautiful, boasting some of the best cutscenes of its time. Unfortunately, frequent quick-time events disrupted the flow of gameplay. Removing those could make the game more appealing to a broader audience today. While The Legend of Dragoon is available on PS5, it would benefit from some modern enhancements to fully realize its potential.

4) Eternal Sonata

The game studio tri-Crescendo teamed up with Namco Bandai to create an RPG centered around the life and music of Frederic Chopin. While it sounds unusual, the game largely succeeds. Players take on the role of Chopin as he explores a dreamlike world, battling enemies with musical abilities.

The music is the highlight of this game, fitting perfectly with its setting. The combat is solid, and the story is an interesting way to discover the life of a famous composer. While enjoyable, a remake could improve the story and gameplay, and would also bring the game to current gaming platforms.

3) Skies of Arcadia

Skies of Arcadia is a beloved classic game originally released for the Dreamcast and GameCube, created by Sega. The game takes place in a vast world with plenty of places to discover. You control a crew of air pirates who team up to defeat a powerful, evil empire. While the story is a familiar tale of adventure and daring, the game’s focus on exploration is what truly makes Arcadia special.

The game is currently limited to older systems. Plans to bring it to the PlayStation 2 and PC fell through, and despite Sega suggesting a modern re-release several times, it hasn’t happened. Now, a complete remake would be the best approach, potentially starting a fresh wave of air pirate games.

2) Wild Arms

There aren’t enough role-playing games with a Wild West setting, and Wild Arms perfectly fills that gap. It combines classic Western themes with fantasy elements. Players control a group of adventurers – a robot mechanic, a swordsman, and a princess with unique abilities – as they explore the game’s world.

The original Wild Arms unfortunately didn’t get as much attention as Final Fantasy VII, so many players never experienced this fantastic game. Luckily, an updated version is now available on newer consoles with several improvements to make it more enjoyable. While Wild Arms was already remade for the PlayStation 2, another remake could really bring out the game’s best qualities.

1) Final Fantasy VI

It simply had to be Final Fantasy VI. The success of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy clearly shows there’s a huge demand for the classic Final Fantasy games. While FF7 is more popular, I believe FF6 is actually a little bit better if you ignore the amazing graphics the series received with the PlayStation 2 versions.

We don’t need a full remake like Final Fantasy VII received. Fans would be thrilled with a simple update of the original game, featuring modern 3D graphics. There have been rumors about this for years, so hopefully it will happen soon.
