Including secret characters is a great way to engage players. Fans who really love a game enjoy discovering hidden content, and developers often reward that dedication. However, unlocking these characters can sometimes be incredibly challenging. It might involve solving tricky puzzles, completing extremely difficult tasks, or even finding hidden updates outside of the game itself – but the effort can be worthwhile for dedicated players.
6) The Keeper – The Binding of Isaac
A lot of players consider The Forgotten to be the most difficult character to unlock in The Binding of Isaac. And that’s understandable. Unlocking it isn’t just about completing a series of tricky steps – you also have to win a challenging boss fight gauntlet.
Players discovered a secret in the game The Forgotten by digging into its files, which bothered the creator, Edmund McMillen. As a result, he designed The Keeper and made unlocking it a much bigger challenge. This time, players had to collaborate to solve a complex puzzle that extended into the real world. After a lengthy and collaborative effort, McMillen released an update that unlocked the character. While The Keeper is now fairly easy to obtain, unlocking it originally required a significant amount of work from the community.
5) Stefan – Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Okay, so unlocking Stefan in Path of Radiance isn’t super hard if you look up a guide. But trying to get him the normal way? That’s a real challenge! You have to make some seriously weird choices during the game to even have a shot. He doesn’t become available until Chapter 15, and even then, you have to unlock him during a battle. It’s not exactly straightforward!
To get him, you’ll first need to have either Lethe or Mordecai in your group. Then, one of them needs to stand on a specific tile – it’s far away from where you’ll fight in Chapter 15. If they do, he’ll join your party. However, if anyone else steps on that tile, Stefan will give them his sword and then permanently leave the game.
4) Reiji Kido – Revelations: Persona
Reiji Kido’s introduction is unique and challenging. The game immediately forces you to make a difficult choice, and failing to do so means you won’t be able to unlock him as a character in Persona.
The challenge doesn’t stop there. You also need to make very specific choices and turn down help from certain characters. If you stray from this path even once, you’ll prevent Reiji from joining your team, which is a shame because he’s a strong character and a valuable asset. Missing out on him will put you at a significant disadvantage.
3) Cloud Strife – Final Fantasy Tactics
It’s understandable that unlocking Cloud in Final Fantasy Tactics is challenging. He’s such a popular character that Square Enix probably wanted players to work for it. However, the process could have been a little more straightforward.
Getting Cloud to join your team takes a bit of work and isn’t explained directly in the game. You’ll need to keep Mustadio in your party until Chapter 4 to unlock the option of returning to his hometown. From there, you’ll start a long side quest, which includes a hidden boss battle and buying flowers from a girl in Sal Ghidos. If you complete all these steps, Cloud will be summoned to the world of Final Fantasy Tactics and join your party. He’s a strong character, making the effort worthwhile, but it’s unlikely players would figure out this process on their own.
2) Zero – Bayonetta
Bayonetta is known for its fast-paced and challenging combat, but there’s an even greater test for players hoping to unlock a hidden character. While this character, Zero, isn’t very durable—he can be defeated quickly—he offers an extra layer of difficulty for those seeking a truly demanding Bayonetta experience.
You’ll need to complete Lost Chapter: Angel Slayer to unlock this character. This involves a grueling series of 51 battles: 10 on Normal difficulty, 20 on Hard, and 20 on Non-Stop Climax, culminating in a fight against Bayonetta. While it’s a tough test for dedicated players, the reward doesn’t quite match the amount of effort required.
1) Nordom – Planescape: Torment
Getting Nordom on your team is a bit of a challenge, requiring a hidden process and a difficult dungeon. You’ll start by purchasing a seemingly useless item from the Curiosity Shop. But if you speak with Yvana or a true Modron, you’ll discover it’s actually a Modron figurine.
Once you find this somewhat hidden information, you can enter the dungeon maze. It’s one of the hardest dungeons in Planescape: Torment, featuring challenging enemies and a constantly changing layout. If you manage to complete it, Nordom will become a member of your party. It takes effort, but he’s a special character who’s well worth the trouble.
