According to recent leaks and gossip, a new Nintendo Direct broadcast is anticipated on September 12th. If this leak turns out to be false, it’s certain that an announcement will take place soon, possibly before the launch of Pokémon Legends: Z-A in October. At present, the upcoming games for the Nintendo Switch, particularly the Switch 2, are scarce. The console has had a slow beginning, but whenever the next Direct airs, this trend is likely to reverse. We anticipate that several exciting announcements will be made during this broadcast, though it’s unlikely that all of them will occur in a single Direct due to their significant impact. Here’s hoping that at least some of these forthcoming reveals are unveiled.
1. New Animal Crossing
It’s been five years since the release of “Animal Crossing: New Horizons” significantly impacted the gaming industry. Although we won’t have a global pandemic to boost its successor’s sales, you can expect Nintendo to revisit this popular franchise. The long gap since the last major update for “New Horizons” suggests that the developers may be focusing on a completely new game. As Nintendo doesn’t produce many games in this genre, it’s likely that this upcoming project will be given top priority. Announcing it before the holiday season would strategically boost its sales potential.
2. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond‘s Release Date
Apart from the upcoming launch of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Nintendo might need an early first-party showcase due to the prolonged wait for the release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, which is currently scheduled for 2025. If a Direct event takes place in September, it leaves Nintendo only four months to confirm the game’s date and promote it before its release. If they are planning to stick to the 2025 schedule, then announcing a release date promptly becomes necessary, and the next Nintendo Direct, featuring a new trailer as well, could be the perfect opportunity for this announcement.
3. Mario Kart World DLC
It’s surprising that Mario Kart World hasn’t received any downloadable content (DLC) yet, especially since Donkey Kong Bananza was recently released with new costumes for Donkey Kong and Pauline. However, considering the game’s $80 price tag versus Donkey Kong Bananza being cheaper, it’s likely that DLC will be available as Nintendo has historically increased prices. Since there’s a lot of potential for additional tracks and characters in Mario Kart World, every Nintendo Direct event from now until the end of the game presents an opportunity to introduce new content. It seems unlikely that Nintendo would let the game remain without any further updates for an extended period.
4. New Super Smash Bros.
As a devoted gamer, I can’t help but notice the emergence of “Mario Kart World” and feel a thrill that hints at an impending unveiling of a fresh iteration of “Super Smash Bros.” – perhaps even one without the mastermind Masahiro Sakurai. The exceptional popularity of “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” and “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” has set the bar high for their respective franchises, yet here we are, already witnessing a new “Mario Kart”. This indicates that Nintendo is anything but idle when it comes to its iconic fighting game series. If “Mario Kart World” was indeed the first glimpse of Switch 2’s lineup, then I can’t help but speculate that we won’t have to wait too long for a new installment of “Smash Bros.” – making the September Direct an ideal opportunity for its reveal.
5. 2D Mario
It’s quite likely that we won’t see a new 3D Mario title for some time. Donkey Kong Bananza has become the focus instead, and Nintendo would rather not jeopardize the success of such an impressive game. Launching a 3D Mario game could potentially impact the sales of Bananza. However, there’s still room for a 2D platformer in their lineup. The recent release, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, was highly praised, and Nintendo could further develop this concept. With the current climate, it seems sensible that they would not skip releasing a new 2D Mario game. Since 3D games aren’t currently viable for their mascot character, a 2D offering appears to be the logical choice.
6. New Zelda
It seems unlikely that the next major installment of The Legend of Zelda series will be released soon. Given that Tears of the Kingdom was launched six years after Breath of the Wild, it’s possible that Nintendo may instead release a smaller game in the near future, especially since Echoes of Wisdom came out just a year after Breath of the Wild. However, if neither of these options is being considered, there’s a strong possibility that Nintendo might opt for a remake or remaster of an older game like Twilight Princess or The Wind Waker, as fans have been eagerly requesting this for some time now. This seems particularly fitting considering the gap between current games in the series.
