Even though Kylo Ren died in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the character remains popular. Recently, actor Adam Driver shared that he suggested a story idea to Lucasfilm where Kylo Ren would return after finding redemption. However, Disney executives Bob Iger and Alan Bergman ultimately decided against the project. Driver’s comments have sparked a growing fan campaign to get a film called “The Hunt for Ben Solo” made. In the meantime, fans are following an ongoing comic book series that has introduced a new mystery surrounding Kylo Ren.
Issue #11 of the Star Wars: Legacy of Vader comic, created by Charles Soule and Luke Ross, takes place between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. The story focuses on Kylo Ren’s efforts to emulate Darth Vader, and this issue brings that storyline to a turning point. Interestingly, Kylo Ren also acquires a new lightsaber in this issue and, through physical contact, turns its blade blood-red – a similar effect seen last year in the series The Acolyte.
And then the crystal fractures, as though the process was somehow unstable.

The practice of corrupting a kyber crystal isn’t recent. Those who embrace the dark side ‘bleed’ the crystal by infusing it with their negative emotions – anger, hatred, and rage – forcing it to become aligned with the dark side. Sith use these corrupted crystals as a sign of their power, believing they control the Force itself. Kylo Ren’s unique lightsaber is a result of an incomplete corruption process; he fractured the crystal, and the design of his blade helps manage the extra energy caused by the unstable, overheated crystal.
Why Would Kylo Ren’s SECOND Kyber Crystal Break Too?

Look, it was one thing for Kylo to mess up his first kyber crystal – he was still pretty new to the dark side at that point, and it happened right after he fell. But the guy’s been obsessed with the Force for years, even figuring out the Dyad before Palpatine! And in the comics, specifically Legacy of Vader #11, he bleeds a crystal like it’s nothing… but it still cracks in his hand. Something feels seriously off about all this, honestly. It’s like his power is too much, even for him to control.
Kylo Ren’s attempts to force kyber crystals to yield seem to break them, and there’s a theory why. It could be that his power level, boosted by being part of a rare Force Dyad, is simply too strong for the crystals to handle. We see a similar effect in a vision from The Rise of Skywalker: Rey’s future self wielded a lightsaber with the same crackling sound, implying she also damaged a kyber crystal. If this is true, neither Kylo Ren nor Rey can fully connect with a kyber crystal because their power overwhelms it.
Another possibility is that Kylo Ren’s struggles reflect a life forced onto him, rather than a deliberate choice to embrace the dark side. He was manipulated by Palpatine into believing he had no other option. If this is true, the kyber crystals shatter because they’re being controlled by someone who is also being controlled – Kylo Ren, by Palpatine, who saw himself as the embodiment of the dark side.
Legacy of Vader #11 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
