Few shows have launched actors’ careers quite like Stranger Things. While Winona Ryder was already a well-known star thanks to films like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice, the rest of the cast was largely made up of young, relatively unknown actors at the start of the series. The Duffer brothers clearly had a knack for spotting talent, as many of the younger cast members have gone on to achieve significant success. Millie Bobby Brown has become a major star for Netflix, appearing in films like Enola Holmes and Damsel. Her co-star, Finn Wolfhard, is also thriving, leading the new Ghostbusters movies and appearing in IT.
Even with all their recent success, actors Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard acknowledge the long career of their co-star, David Harbour. Harbour, who plays the popular character Jim Hopper, has been working in Hollywood for years, appearing in films like Suicide Squad and shows like The Newsroom and Brokeback Mountain. However, it was his role in Stranger Things, helping the kids in Hawkins, Indiana, that truly brought him recognition. After that, opportunities seemed endless, though there’s one decision he likely regrets.
David Harbour Once Tried to Lead a Comic Book Franchise With Sci-Fi Elements
When it comes to superheroes, Marvel and DC are the most well-known names. They’ve earned this position through years of success with their comic books, movies, and TV shows. While it’s tough competing with these two giants, other companies still try. Dark Horse Comics has created several films, including Sin City, Tank Girl, and The Mask. However, the Hellboy movies are their biggest achievement, thanks to Guillermo del Toro’s fantastic work bringing the characters to life. Sadly, del Toro moved on after two films, allowing other filmmakers to reimagine the character.
A reboot of Hellboy began to take shape in the late 2010s when Neil Marshall, known for Game of Thrones, became the director. David Harbour quickly joined the project, and production started. Unfortunately, problems arose during filming, leading Marshall to step away from his original plan. The finished film received overwhelmingly negative reviews, with critics and fans criticizing its confusing plot and uninspired action. Harbour defended the movie, arguing it was being unfairly measured against Marvel films. Luckily, Marvel Studios didn’t hold it against him and still saw potential for Harbour in the superhero world.
Red Guardian Is Allowing David Harbour to Live His Best Life
Once finished with his role requiring red makeup, Harbour started looking for a new project. He decided to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, taking on the part of Alexei Shostakov, also known as Red Guardian, in Black Widow. Red Guardian was portrayed as a complex character who initially prioritized fame over his family. However, the character developed and ultimately found redemption, achieving a satisfying conclusion to his story.
David Harbour will return as Red Guardian in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, joining the new New Avengers team. While this role won’t be as prominent as his lead in Hellboy, being part of such a large and successful team is likely a better experience than working on a troubled project.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
