6 Years Ago, This Superhero Movie Was Supposed To Start a New MCU Rival (but Was a Huge Box Office Bomb)

The entertainment industry was severely impacted in 2020, halting both film production and distribution. Movie theaters were closed for a long time, and when they reopened, it was a slow process with limited showings. Many people were also hesitant to return to theaters due to concerns about COVID-19. The industry didn’t really start to recover until May 2021 with the release of A Quiet Place Part II. As a result, very few superhero movies came out in 2020. Birds of Prey was released just before the shutdowns began, but it didn’t do well. Wonder Woman 1984, a sequel that wasn’t well-received, was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.

While the second Wonder Woman movie earned $46.8 million domestically – less than expected for a blockbuster in normal times – it performed much better than Bloodshot, starring Vin Diesel. Bloodshot didn’t even have the added challenge of a simultaneous streaming release, but still failed to gain a significant audience. This ultimately stalled plans for a larger connected universe based on the character. Let’s take a closer look at what went wrong with Bloodshot.

What Went Wrong With Bloodshot?

As a comic book movie fan, I remember there was a lot of hype around Bloodshot being the start of something big – a whole shared universe based on Valiant Comics. They own the rights to characters like Doctor Mirage, Ninjak, Shadowman, and Rai. Honestly, those names aren’t exactly household, but it reminded me of the Guardians of the Galaxy – nobody really knew them before their movie blew up, so there was a chance!

Bloodshot is probably the most well-known character from this series, largely due to his striking appearance. He has pale white skin caused by nanites in his bloodstream, with a bright red circle prominently displayed on his chest. While Vin Diesel seemed like a good fit for the role based on the comic book character, the movie itself was surprisingly unremarkable.

Bloodshot is a typical movie about someone with amnesia, where the main character gradually recovers lost memories and uncovers a surprising truth. The most interesting thing about the film isn’t the story itself, but the fact that Guy Pearce, who also starred in Memento, appears in it.

While Bloodshot isn’t necessarily the worst superhero film of recent years, it doesn’t quite justify its $45 million budget. The action is enjoyable, and the movie looks better than expected for a lower-budget production, but it doesn’t offer anything particularly new or improved compared to other superhero films.

The trailers already hinted that the movie was confusing and lacked originality. It only earned $39.9 million worldwide in theaters, and even when people could rent it, it never gained a dedicated fanbase. A sequel was mentioned in late 2020, but it never materialized. With no progress after five and a half years, it’s safe to assume that sequel won’t be happening.
