6 Years Ago Today, Star Wars Revealed the Origin of Rey & Kylo Ren’s Force Bond

The relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren (Ben Solo) was central to the Star Wars sequel trilogy. From their first meeting in The Force Awakens, they shared a unique Force connection that developed throughout the films. Ultimately, this bond led to Kylo’s redemption and was crucial in defeating Emperor Palpatine and saving the galaxy. The story behind their connection was further explored in Marvel Comics’ The Rise of Kylo Ren #4, released on March 11, 2020. This comic detailed Kylo Ren’s origins as a villain and hinted at his eventual path back to the light side.

Kylo Ren (Ben Solo) and Rey share a rare and powerful connection called a Force Dyad. This is an unbreakable link between two people strong in the Force, allowing them to connect across any distance and even share objects through the Force, as shown in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. When they fight alongside each other, their powers are even stronger. In dire situations, one can even transfer their Force energy to the other, saving their life – a sacrifice Ben made to bring Rey back to life. The story behind their unique connection was revealed in 2020.

Kylo Ren and Rey Formed a Connection Long Before They Met

The miniseries The Rise of Kylo Ren details Ben Solo’s journey to becoming the villain Kylo Ren. Born to Leia Organa and Han Solo, and trained as a Jedi by his uncle Luke Skywalker, Ben had the potential to be a great Jedi Knight. However, he struggled with feelings of neglect from his parents, the revelation of his grandfather Darth Vader’s identity, and the pressure to follow in the footsteps of his family’s powerful legacy. Palpatine recognized Ben’s vulnerabilities, and Supreme Leader Snoke exploited them, leading Ben to embrace his darker side and ultimately join the Knights of Ren.

Ben left the Jedi Order after Luke, fearing his nephew’s potential for darkness, instinctively ignited his lightsaber. Ben reacted by collapsing the training room around Luke. Filled with shock and anger, Ben then unleashed a powerful Force blast that leveled the Jedi temple, killing many of his peers. Further influenced by Snoke, Ben allied himself with the Knights of Ren – a ruthless group of Force-sensitive warriors led by the cruel Ren. Even amongst this violent group, Ben struggled with his actions and didn’t want to cause harm. It wasn’t until his former friends and classmates, Tai and Voe, found him that he fully embraced the dark side.

During his fight with Tai, Ben tried to reason with his old friend, insisting there was still goodness within him. But when Ben hesitated to deliver the final blow, Ren used the Force to kill Tai. Devastated by the loss of the last person who believed in him, Ben lost control and unleashed his rage. He fully embraced the dark side, killing Ren and enjoying his newfound freedom from morality. It was during this battle that a young girl named Rey, on the planet Jakku, suddenly felt a strange chill – the moment their powerful Force connection was formed. After killing Ren and another Jedi named Voe, Ben transformed into the cruel and intimidating Kylo Ren.

The Force Chose Rey to Save Kylo Ren

The powerful connection between Rey and Kylo Ren began when Kylo turned to the dark side, and reveals a lot about who they are, where the films were going, and the nature of the Force itself. Details in The Rise of Kylo Ren #4 give new meaning to their first meeting in The Force Awakens and throughout the sequel trilogy. Crucially, it highlights that the Force has a will of its own and actively works to restore balance.

In The Force Awakens, it was obvious that Rey and Kylo Ren shared a strong connection. Even before they met, Kylo reacted strongly when he discovered a girl had assisted Finn and BB-8 in escaping, sensing she was significant. The concept of a Force Dyad explains why Rey could resist and turn back Kylo’s attempt to probe her mind – their minds are deeply linked. This connection also gave Rey an advantage in their lightsaber duel, allowing her to anticipate his moves and boost her own skills, even though she had no prior lightsaber training. As the story continued, Rey and Kylo gained a better understanding of their Force Dyad, using it both when they were enemies and eventually as allies.

The unique connection between Rey and Kylo Ren, known as a Force Dyad, highlights an important characteristic of the Force. The timing of their connection is crucial: it formed precisely when Kylo fully embraced the dark side and killed Ren. This wasn’t something either of them intentionally created; the Force itself brought them together. This raises questions about whether the Force has a will of its own and how much control it exerts over events. The Dyad suggests the Force identified a powerful dark side user and created a counterbalance – someone to potentially bring them back to the light.

In the final two Star Wars films, Rey consistently tries to reach Kylo Ren, hoping to guide him back to the light. Even when she briefly struggles with the dark side herself, she chooses compassion, healing Kylo after stabbing him. Rey’s unwavering belief in him helps Ben Solo overcome his anger and abandon his identity as Kylo Ren. Ultimately, he joins her to fight against Palpatine. His redemption is complete when he sacrifices himself to save Rey, mirroring the mercy she showed him. The Force brought Rey and Ben together, recognizing her compassion as the key to his salvation.

Similar to how nature seeks equilibrium, the Force also strives for balance, and it achieved this by creating a powerful connection between Rey and Ben. Both came from contrasting backgrounds – descended from both dark and selfless individuals – making them perfect counterparts. This unique bond, known as a Force Dyad, requires individuals representing both the light and dark sides to unite. The Force brought them together because true strength comes from trust and understanding, allowing one to conquer their inner struggles. Rey’s greatest power wasn’t her natural ability with the Force or her connection to the Emperor; it was her compassion. This is why the Force chose her to not only restore balance to the galaxy, but also to heal Ben’s spirit.
