61-Year-Old Fantasy Classic Getting Its Second Reboot of the 21st Century

We’re seeing a lot of reboots and revivals in television right now, and Hollywood is now turning its attention to a beloved sitcom from the 1960s. Over the last ten years, many popular movies and TV shows – like Gilmore Girls and Harry Potter – have been reimagined for modern audiences. This classic fantasy series, which originally ran for eight seasons, is getting a reboot for the second time this century, more than 60 years after it first aired.

Fox is developing a new take on the classic show Bewitched, according to Deadline. The series will be led by writer and executive producer Judalina Neira (known for The Boys and Daisy Jones and the Six) and executive producer Doug Robinson, with Sony Pictures Television handling production. Like the original, which starred Elizabeth Montgomery as the charming witch Samantha Stephens, the show will focus on Samantha and her husband Darrin as they deal with challenging family dynamics, cultural differences, and the difficulties of blending their two very different worlds.

This Isn’t the First Bewitched Reboot, but It’s Very Different From the Rest

The classic TV show Bewitched was created by Sol Saks and ran on ABC for eight seasons, from 1964 to 1972, totaling 254 episodes. Its clever combination of fantasy and everyday family life, along with its use of magic to playfully critique suburban living, made it a huge hit and a lasting part of pop culture, continuing to influence entertainment today.

I’ve always loved the story of Bewitched, and it’s been retold in Hollywood a few times! The most recent version, from 2005, was really interesting. It was a romantic comedy directed by Nora Ephron, starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. They played actors making a Bewitched remake, and it’s hilarious because Will Ferrell’s character finds out his co-star, Nicole Kidman, is actually a witch!

Beyond the recent movie reboot, it’s honestly surprising how many times they’ve tried to bring Bewitched back to television. Back in 1977, there was a spinoff called Tabitha on ABC, focusing on Samantha’s daughter, played by Lisa Hartman, but it only lasted one season. Since then, we’ve seen attempts at revivals fall through at CBS (2011), NBC (2014), and again at ABC in 2018. And get this – Sony and Flying Bark are still working on a live-action reboot, this time centered around a young Tabitha, which was first announced in 2023. It seems like this show just keeps popping up!

The upcoming reboot of the show on Fox will be quite different from past attempts. Instead of a half-hour comedy, it will be a full hour-long drama, similar in style to the show Bel-Air on Peacock. This change will allow the creators to explore the characters, their relationships, and the show’s themes in more depth. Currently, the reboot is still being developed, and details like casting haven’t been revealed yet.
