As the Marvel Cinematic Universe grows, it’s getting harder to give every character the screen time they deserve. With so many movies and TV shows now part of the franchise, the spotlight naturally falls on its biggest stars, leaving other characters with less focus. This isn’t a new problem – older franchises like the Spider-Man films and the X-Men series faced similar issues with having too many characters. Even with a huge number of superheroes appearing on screen, some performances really stand out and become fan favorites, making it disappointing when those actors don’t return for future projects.
Today, January 27th, we celebrate the 61st birthday of Alan Cumming, an actor who brought a memorable Nightcrawler to life in the 2003 film X2. His performance, featured in a stunning opening scene, perfectly blended the character’s thoughtful and spiritual side with his incredible acrobatic abilities. Despite this strong debut, Nightcrawler was surprisingly absent from the next X-Men film, leaving fans wondering why such a valuable hero would suddenly leave the team during a crucial battle. Though younger versions of Nightcrawler appeared in later films, fans haven’t seen Cumming reprise the role—until now. Fortunately, he’ll have a chance to revisit the character and show fans what they’ve been missing.
Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler Is One of the X-Men Returning in Avengers: Doomsday

The new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is set to be the epic conclusion of the Multiversal Saga. It uses a broken reality to bring back beloved characters from the old 20th Century Fox films to battle Victor von Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Fans are especially excited about the return of Nightcrawler, who will join Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), and Scott Summers (James Marsden). This reunion is meaningful because it gives fans a chance to see these characters again after they were unexpectedly left out of the series over 20 years ago.
The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday shows the X-Men facing a serious crisis. We see the destroyed remains of Xavier’s School, and Cyclops using his powerful optic blast. This hints that the X-Men are being pursued, likely by Sentinels controlled by Doctor Doom. Although Nightcrawler hasn’t appeared in the trailers yet, the actor who plays him says this experience was much better than filming X2. He explained that the makeup to turn him blue now only takes 90 minutes, a huge improvement from the four-and-a-half hours it took in 2003. He also described returning to the role as a positive experience, allowing him to enjoy the character without the physical discomfort of the first movie.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
