Today would have been the 61st birthday of a truly iconic comic book movie star. It’s been 32 years since The Crow premiered in theaters, bringing the dark gothic horror comic by James O’Barr to life on the big screen. The comic tells the story of Eric, a man murdered and forced to witness terrible acts committed against his fiancée, Shelly. Fueled by rage and trauma, Eric is resurrected by a supernatural crow to avenge his and Shelly’s deaths. In the 1994 film, Brandon Lee powerfully portrayed Eric Draven.
Born on February 1, 1965, Brandon Lee was the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee is remembered as one of the greatest movie stars in martial arts history, and Brandon was his only son. Tragically, Bruce Lee passed away in 1973 at just 32 years old, when Brandon was only eight. He died unexpectedly while working on the film Enter the Dragon, collapsing during a voice-over recording session.
Even with a challenging start, Brandon Lee pursued a career in Hollywood, continuing his father’s legacy. Tragically, he only starred in five films before his untimely death. He began with the martial arts movie Legacy of Rage in 1986 at age 21, then appeared in Laser Mission, Showdown in Little Tokyo, and Rapid Fire. His final role was in The Crow, a film often praised as one of the greatest comic book adaptations outside of the Marvel and DC universes.
Brandon Lee’s Legacy Was Cut Short During The Crow
As a movie fan, it’s still incredibly sad to think about Brandon Lee’s death during the filming of The Crow. What makes it even more heartbreaking is that he was so young – just 28 years old, which was actually younger than his father was when he passed away. It was a terrible accident on set involving a prop gun. A piece of a dummy bullet was left inside, and when the gun was fired, it hit him in the stomach with fatal force. The doctors worked on him for six hours, but sadly, they couldn’t save him. It’s a real tragedy.
After Brandon Lee’s tragic death, his stunt double, Chad Stahelski—who later directed the John Wick films—completed the remaining scenes for The Crow. Many well-known actors, such as Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Steven Seagal, and David Carradine, attended Lee’s funeral. Although some questioned finishing the movie after his death, both Eliza Hutton, Lee’s fiancée, and his mother encouraged its completion. They wanted the film to serve as a final showcase of his talent and a lasting tribute to his work.
