It’s been 62 years since the debut of the Doctor’s most well-known and frightening enemy in Doctor Who. Throughout his time-traveling adventures in the TARDIS, the Doctor has faced many monsters and villains. Some have become particularly memorable, either by appearing often or by being featured in the show’s earliest episodes from 1963.

The very first adventure of the First Doctor (William Hartnell) and his companions – Susan Foreman (Carole Ann Ford), Ian Chesterton (William Russell), and Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill) – involved encountering a tribe from the Stone Age. The second story, “The Daleks” from 1963, introduced a monster that would become one of the Doctor’s most iconic and enduring foes. Broadcast in seven parts between December 21, 1963, and February 1, 1964, “The Daleks” established the Daleks as the Doctor’s longest-running enemies.

How the Daleks Have Evolved Since Their 1963 Doctor Who Debut

Since first appearing in Doctor Who in 1963, the Daleks’ basic look, sound, and plans haven’t changed significantly. In the very first story, “The Daleks,” the Doctor and his companions land on the planet Skaro and are immediately captured, becoming involved in the Daleks’ ongoing conflict with the Thals. Over time, the Daleks have become the Doctor’s most recurring enemies, which has allowed their backstory and importance within the show to expand.

Throughout the long-running series, several incarnations of the Doctor have faced the Daleks during pivotal moments in their history. The Fourth Doctor encountered their creator, Davros, in “Genesis of the Daleks” (1975), while the Second Doctor witnessed the rise of the Dalek Emperor in “The Evil of the Daleks” (1967). Even the War Doctor fought them during the devastating Time War in “The Day of the Doctor” (2013). Because the Daleks are linked to some of the Doctor’s most heartbreaking experiences, they remain his greatest enemies, and have become even more frightening in recent years.

Since their return in 2005 with the episode “Dalek,” the Daleks have been central villains in the new series of Doctor Who. They’ve caused major events like the Ninth Doctor’s regeneration, battled the Cybermen in London, and even attempted to integrate with humans in 1930s New York. Their schemes have threatened all of reality, involved infiltrating wartime bunkers, resurrecting their creator Davros, and nearly being controlled by the British government. It’s clear the Daleks will remain Doctor Who’s biggest and most persistent enemies for many years to come.
