7 Alternate Marvel Romances That Should Be Canon

While Marvel Comics didn’t invent the idea of a multiverse in superhero stories, they’ve truly excelled with it. The concept of a Marvel multiverse as we know it today really took shape in the 1980s, with storylines like “Days of Future Past” and the Captain Britain series from Marvel UK (written by Alan Moore, who specifically designated the main Marvel Earth as Earth-616). Marvel frequently uses the multiverse to explore alternate realities – often darker versions of our world – and they enjoy reimagining characters and their connections, even altering key aspects of their lives and relationships.

Love has always been a key element in Marvel stories, and alternate universes often present fresh and unexpected relationships. Some of these pairings are so compelling, they could really shake things up in the main Marvel timeline. Here are seven alternate-universe romances that deserve to be made official, as they’re more engaging than some of the relationships we already have.

7) Emma Frost/Black Bolt

The comic series “Old Man Logan” is popular for its unique take on familiar characters. During their journey through a post-apocalyptic world, Logan and Hawkeye find help from the Inhumans, and we discover an unexpected pairing: Emma Frost and Black Bolt. They’d make a formidable couple, as both are fiercely loyal to their people, incredibly intelligent, and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. Emma’s telepathic abilities would allow her to communicate for Black Bolt, who is unable to speak, and neither character is currently being utilized to their full potential, making this a great match.

6) Storm/Quicksilver

The ‘Age of Apocalypse’ storyline is a classic, and it gave us some fan-favorite takes on the X-Men. One of the most memorable changes was the romantic relationship between Quicksilver and Storm. They were a great pairing, and many fans would love to see them together in the regular Marvel universe. While they have contrasting personalities, Storm has a history of handling strong-willed characters – like Wolverine – and she’d likely be able to balance Quicksilver as well. It would be interesting to explore their dynamic in the main 616 timeline.

5) Gambit/Lila Cheney

Gambit and Rogue are a popular couple, but they don’t really share many interests. In one alternate storyline, Gambit found a better match with Lila Cheney, a teleporting mutant, and the two became partners in crime. The main universe version of Lila is a rebellious, intergalactic rock star with a similar adventurous spirit to Gambit. They’d be a fantastic pairing, and many fans think they’d work well together if Marvel ever decided to change Gambit’s relationship with Rogue.

4) Cyclops/Frenzy

The ‘Age of X’ storyline from the 2000s was similar to ‘Age of Apocalypse,’ but didn’t achieve the same popularity. Still, it has a dedicated fanbase, and many enjoyed the dynamic between Cyclops (who went by Basilisk) and Frenzy, a powerful but often overlooked mutant. While Cyclops is famous for his romances with Jean Grey and Emma Frost, those relationships can feel predictable. A pairing between Cyclops and Frenzy in the main Marvel universe (616) would be exciting, as they both deeply care about mutantkind and would be a fresh, interesting couple.

3) Apocalypse/Moira MacTaggert

The recent changes to the X-Men’s world, known as the Krakoa Era, were heavily influenced by Moira MacTaggert. It was discovered she’s a mutant who’s been reborn multiple times, and in one life, she was involved with Apocalypse, even fighting against humanity alongside him. While their relationship wasn’t fully explored, it would be compelling to see them as a couple in the main Marvel universe. Although Moira lost her powers at the end of her last appearance – powers that essentially ensured her survival – Apocalypse potentially has the ability to restore them, which could make them a formidable and villainous duo.

2) Psylocke/Blob

The ‘Age of X-Man’ storyline, much like the earlier ‘Age of Apocalypse,’ hasn’t resonated with most fans. However, one thing readers do remember is the surprisingly sweet relationship between Psylocke and Blob. It would be great to see that dynamic explored again in the main Marvel universe. While Psylocke has had other significant relationships – like Greycrow and with Elizabeth Braddock as Askani – pairing her with Blob could be really interesting. Blob is a more compelling character than people often realize, and a romance with Psylocke might help showcase his appeal.

1) Wolverine/Hercules

Wolverine is known for having many romantic interests, but his love life isn’t always straightforward. In one version of the Marvel universe, Wolverine and Hercules were a couple, and fans really enjoyed seeing them together. They shared a lot of common ground and had great chemistry. Many would love to see this pairing become canon in the main Marvel universe, and it could also give Hercules more focus.
