As a long-time Mario fan, I was thrilled to see so many familiar faces in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. But honestly, I was a little surprised – and disappointed – that Nintendo and Illumination left out seven truly awesome characters. Considering how iconic the Mario franchise is, and how many of its characters are instantly recognizable, I really think the filmmakers could have included a few more! While the movies do a good job bringing many of our favorites to life, they could have gone the extra mile.
I was so excited to see the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it really delivered! Not only did it bring back all the characters we love – Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Bowser – but it went way further this time around. They included so many more faces from the games, like Rosalina, Bowser Jr., Wart, Birdo, and even Mouser! Plus, they managed to sneak in some awesome cameos from other Nintendo favorites like Fox McCloud, Mr. Game & Watch, and ROB. Honestly, after seeing that many characters, I was a little surprised seven others didn’t make it into the movie!
7) The Koopalings

The Koopalings are usually seen as a single unit, even though there are several of them. Given that Bowser Jr. has his own army in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it’s surprising the Koopalings weren’t included. They’re recurring villains throughout the Mario games – appearing in many main series titles and spin-offs – so it feels odd they weren’t even briefly shown in the sequel.
6) Wario

Wario is easily one of the most requested characters for the Mario movies. Originally created as Mario’s opponent, Wario has developed a unique identity, now known for his love of motorcycles, money, garlic, quick mini-games, and… well, farts! He’s a much more developed character than many in the Mario universe, and fans are disappointed he hasn’t appeared in a film yet.
If the Mario films decide to move beyond Bowser and his crew for villains, Wario would be an excellent pick. While he hasn’t been a central villain recently, adding Wario to a third Super Mario Bros. Movie would be incredibly exciting.
5) Waluigi

If Wario appears in a Mario movie, Waluigi absolutely needs to be there with him. Waluigi was originally created as a rival for Luigi and mostly shows up in spin-off games like Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, and Mario Party. However, he’s become incredibly popular with fans, and many people want to see him added to the Super Smash Bros. series. Wario and Waluigi are always funny in those spin-off games, so it would be great to see their comedic duo brought to life in a movie sequel.
4) Professor E. Gadd

Professor E. Gadd first appeared in the Luigi’s Mansion games and isn’t often seen elsewhere, but he’s a surprisingly important figure in the Mario world. He’s the creator of key inventions like F.L.U.D.D., the Poltergust 3000, and even Bowser Jr.’s paintbrush. Considering the paintbrush is featured in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and his logo makes an appearance too, it’s surprising he wasn’t included in the film’s story.
3) Toadsworth

Toadsworth, Princess Peach’s longtime advisor, has mysteriously vanished from recent Mario games, leaving fans wondering what happened to him. He was a prominent character in games like Super Mario Sunshine and the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series, making his absence from the Mario movies particularly noticeable. Adding to the confusion, a new, similar-looking blue Toad with glasses has appeared in his place.
2) Lubba

It was surprising to see Lubba left out of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, considering she filled Rosalina’s role in Super Mario Galaxy 2. As a key Luma and one of Mario’s closest friends, she deserved to be included. She’s even the one who pilots the Starship Mario, so she could have easily taken on the part Fox McCloud played and stayed truer to the Mario Galaxy games.
1) Olimar

Everyone assumed The Super Mario Galaxy would only feature characters from the Mario universe, so Nintendo and Illumination didn’t plan for anyone else. It was surprising, then, to see the Pikmin make an appearance, with their spaceship landing and the aliens stepping out. It’s odd that Olimar, the captain of the Pikmin, wasn’t among them. The ship looked much more like his personal ship than the Pikmin’s usual base, and the spaceport setting would have been a great place for a quick cameo from him.
