Batman is arguably the most central figure in the DC Universe, and a key to his enduring popularity is how relatable he is. Unlike heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman, he doesn’t rely on superpowers, yet he consistently fights for justice. Both fans and filmmakers are captivated by Batman and the compelling characters around him. Matt Reeves is still developing his vision for Batman’s world, and James Gunn has assured fans that Batman will play a significant role in the new DC franchise he’s creating.
With so much focus on live-action Batman, it’s easy to forget how great the animated villains are – and that’s a shame. The Dark Knight has had many fantastic animated versions, with some truly memorable bad guys. Here are seven animated Batman villains that are better than anything we’ve seen in live-action films.
7) Poison Ivy (Harley Quinn)

Poison Ivy hasn’t been well-portrayed in live-action films or TV shows. Uma Thurman’s version in Batman & Robin is often considered particularly weak, and the Gotham series didn’t do the character justice either. Harley Quinn offers a different take, presenting Poison Ivy as a strong advocate for the environment who isn’t afraid to fight for what she believes in. Plus, she’s a supportive friend to Harley, which adds to her appeal.
6) Red Hood (Batman: Under the Red Hood)

Currently, Jason Todd is only portrayed in live-action on the show Titans, which is known for being even more complicated than other DC movies and shows. His storyline involves being killed by the Joker, brought back to life, and becoming the Red Hood, leading him to pursue his old allies. However, the show’s depiction struggles because those allies aren’t truly responsible for his death. In contrast, the animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood effectively focuses Jason’s anger on the appropriate target – his adoptive father, Bruce Wayne – and gives him a compelling emotional journey as he confronts his inner demons.
5) Ra’s al Ghul (Young Justice)

In Batman Begins, Batman takes on a challenge he can barely handle when he clashes with the League of Shadows. Their leader, Ra’s al Ghul, intends to destroy Gotham City by poisoning its water supply, but his plan ultimately fails. The version of Ra’s al Ghul in Young Justice is much more successful, forming alliances with both the Light and the Reach to try and conquer the Earth. What’s particularly notable is the level of respect he commands from the other villains in the show.
4) Deathstroke (Teen Titans)

Deathstroke’s recent portrayal in the DC movies wasn’t particularly impressive. His role in the Arrowverse TV series, however, was much more impactful, especially his intense rivalry with Oliver Queen. The one misstep in the Arrowverse was giving him a chance to turn good. In contrast, the Teen Titans animated series perfectly captures Slade Wilson’s ruthless nature, as he relentlessly torments Batman’s former protégé and their friends, ultimately meeting his demise in Season 2.
3) Joker (Batman: The Animated Series)

Joker might seem like a surprising pick, especially since Heath Ledger’s portrayal in The Dark Knight is often considered the greatest performance in any comic book movie. That’s a valid point, but Christopher Nolan’s films only explore one side of the Joker. In Batman: The Animated Series, the Joker is a consistently challenging villain for Batman, possessing the same unpredictable energy that made Ledger’s version so compelling. Plus, Mark Hamill delivers an outstanding performance in the role.
2) Harley Quinn (Harley Quinn)

Margot Robbie consistently delivers a fantastic performance as Harley Quinn, just like her ex. However, the quality of the movies she’s in sometimes holds her back. While The Suicide Squad is the strongest film featuring her, even there, she doesn’t always get the focus she deserves. In contrast, the animated Harley Quinn series, with Kaley Cuoco voicing the character, consistently puts Harley front and center, allowing her to shine and even become a universe-saving hero.
1) Mr. Freeze (Batman: The Animated Series)

Arnold Schwarzenegger is a legendary figure, and his impact is undeniable. However, many would prefer to forget his role as Mr. Freeze in the movie Batman & Robin, which was filled with silly ice puns and a weak plot. The character was much better handled in Batman: The Animated Series, where a tragic backstory added depth and made his conflicts with Batman far more compelling.
