Mentors play a vital role in anime stories, impacting both the characters they teach and the viewers watching. These figures help heroes grow, overcome weaknesses, and discover their full potential. Like teachers or parents in real life, anime mentors demonstrate that success comes from support and working with others, not going it alone.
These characters are often relatable because they’re flawed and carry the weight of their pasts, even while possessing extraordinary abilities or wisdom. This blend of power and vulnerability makes them both inspiring and serves as a warning, offering valuable lessons through their experiences.
7. Jiraiya (Naruto)
Jiraiya, known as the “Pervy Sage,” was a hugely influential mentor in the world of Naruto. He was incredibly confident and charismatic, but beneath the playful exterior was a true ninja master. As one of the legendary Sannin, his skills in battle and understanding of the ninja world were unmatched. He taught Naruto crucial techniques like the Rasengan and how to manage the Nine-Tails’ power. Despite his goofy personality, Jiraiya was wise and carried a sad history that fueled his dedication to his students. Naruto often struggled to keep up with Jiraiya’s energy, intelligence, and experience. In a way, Jiraiya was almost too skilled for his somewhat naive student, and that difference is what made their relationship so unique.
6. Genkai (Yu Yu Hakusho)
Despite being an elderly woman, Genkai was incredibly impressive. As Yusuke Urameshi’s teacher in Yu Yu Hakusho, she was a highly skilled master of spirit energy and a renowned fighter. She pushed Yusuke through incredibly difficult training, demanding more than most could handle. She was honest and direct, and this tough approach helped him become stronger both in body and mind. While Yusuke was the main character, Genkai always radiated competence and authority, making her a force to be reckoned with whenever she appeared.
5. Master Roshi (Dragon Ball)
Master Roshi, also known as the Turtle Hermit, created the Kamehameha – a move that’s become the signature technique of the entire series. Goku and Krillin began their training with him as children, though they often didn’t fully understand his lessons. Despite appearing as a mischievous old man with a fondness for magazines, Roshi was a brilliant martial artist who had already perfected the skills his students were striving for. He could have easily flaunted his abilities, but he chose a peaceful life on his island, relaxing and enjoying retirement. However, when danger arose, he always proved why he was a master. Whether through unexpected insight or moments of focused intensity, Master Roshi possessed a natural coolness that Goku and Krillin greatly admired.
4. Koro-sensei (Assassination Classroom)
Koro-sensei, a powerful alien octopus who could have destroyed the planet, surprisingly chose to teach a class of struggling middle school students in Assassination Classroom. Despite his incredible speed, nearly impenetrable defenses, and brilliant mind, he could have easily dominated the world. Instead, he dedicated himself to helping his students grow into skilled and self-assured people. While their mission was to assassinate him, he focused on teaching them valuable life lessons, the importance of teamwork, and how to have faith in themselves. Having witnessed the darker aspects of humanity, Koro-sensei still believed in the potential of his students.
3. Satoru Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Gojo is the strongest sorcerer in Jujutsu Kaisen, making him nearly invincible. He confidently shows off his incredible power with a playful arrogance, even when things look bleak. Everything about him – from his signature blindfold to his unique technique, Infinity – exudes coolness. While Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara are talented, they don’t compare to Gojo’s strength; he’s truly in a class of his own, and he’s aware of it. Despite his immense power, he deeply cares for his students and wants to fix the unfair system they’re a part of.
2. Reigen Arataka (Mob Psycho 100)
Reigen Arataka is a master of deception, but surprisingly, he’s also a fantastic mentor in the anime Mob Psycho 100. He starts out seeming like a selfish con artist who exploits Mob’s psychic abilities. However, it soon becomes clear that Reigen truly cares about Mob and wants to help him succeed. Reigen’s insightful advice and strong faith in Mob’s abilities make him an exceptionally effective – and surprisingly wise – mentor.
1. Isaac Netero (Hunter x Hunter)
Isaac Netero was an incredibly powerful Nen user and a master martial artist, surpassing the limits of what most people could achieve. Even as an elderly man, he was a formidable opponent, and his fight against Meruem remains a legendary scene in anime. Netero always strived to reach his full potential, and he proved his dedication to protecting others by sacrificing himself during the Chimera Ant arc.
