7 Anime You Can Binge While Barely Paying Attention

With so much new anime being released, it’s hard to keep track of everything! If you’re looking for shows you can relax and watch without needing to focus intensely – maybe something to have on in the background – there are plenty of great options. While series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Steins;Gate, and Pluto require your full attention, many other anime are perfect for casual viewing. We’ve put together a list of shows that fit the bill – they’re entertaining without being overly demanding.

7.) One-Punch Man

We’re talking about the first season of One-Punch Man, which stands on its own and doesn’t require you to watch the later seasons. Studio Madhouse did a fantastic job bringing Saitama’s story to life with visually stunning animation and exciting fight scenes. The series is known for its straightforward plot – Saitama is a superhero searching for a challenging opponent while battling monsters – and it’s both action-packed and easy to follow. It’s an energetic and thrilling anime, but you don’t need to be completely focused to enjoy it.

6.) Samurai Champloo

While Samurai Champloo features intense sword fights, the heart of the show lies in the journey of Fuu, Mugen, and Jin – a cool, atmospheric adventure that’s more about the feeling than complex plotting. Combining amazing animation with a fantastic soundtrack, this 2004 anime from Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe has become a classic despite only having one season. The series centers around a revenge story, but each episode often feels like its own mini-adventure, similar to a ‘spaghetti western,’ making it a uniquely vibe-driven anime.

5.) Delicious in Dungeon

Studio TRIGGER is known for its exciting and visually dynamic anime like Kill la Kill and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and their latest series, Delicious in Dungeon, is no different. The show follows Laios and his team as they cook meals from monster ingredients while trying to rescue a knight’s sister. It’s a fun, lighthearted watch with beautifully animated food that looks incredibly appetizing. While the dungeon holds its share of danger, the series is more about enjoyment than deep thinking, and sometimes that’s exactly what anime fans need.

4.) Mob Psycho 100

Mob Psycho 100 is a show that can be both heartwarming and heartbreaking, and its exciting psychic fights aren’t overly complicated to follow. Given that it’s created by the same artist behind One-Punch Man, it shares a similar visual style and energy. With a total of 37 episodes, you can jump in at almost any point and enjoy the fantastic animation by Studio BONES and the funny adventures of the main character, a young psychic.

3.) Overlord

The isekai genre—stories about people transported to another world—has some surprisingly complex series lately, like Mushoku Tensei and Re:Zero, which often put their characters in difficult, morally ambiguous situations. If you’re looking for a power fantasy, Overlord delivers. The main character, Ainz Ooal Gown, isn’t much of a thinker, but he’s incredibly powerful. This Studio Madhouse anime has multiple seasons and movies, following a former gamer who’s now an evil sorcerer as he tries to find meaning in his new life. Overlord boasts stunning visuals, especially in its world-building and action sequences, but it’s an easy watch—you don’t need to be completely focused to enjoy it.

2.) Afro Samurai

Similar to Samurai Champloo, Afro Samurai is visually stunning, with each scene looking like a beautiful painting. This Crunchyroll series, originally produced by Studio Gonzo with five episodes, follows the main character’s quest to claim the “number one headband” and become the world’s best swordsman. A sequel, Afro Samurai: Resurrection, continued this vibrant and colorful world, where intense action and violence are always present. While Afro Samurai may not be deeply philosophical, it’s thoroughly entertaining.

1.) Gurren Lagann

I’ve always understood the hype around Gurren Lagann. It’s a twenty-seven-episode series that just throws you into incredible action with really amazing animation. While it’s very different from something complex like Neon Genesis Evangelion, I honestly think it’s just as fun, if not even more so. You can really enjoy the fights and visuals in Gurren Lagann without needing to overthink the story – it’s perfect for when you just want to relax and be entertained. Honestly, there’s something to appreciate whether you’re actively following the plot or not, and that’s probably why so many anime fans consider it a classic.
