The Avengers are widely considered Earth’s greatest heroes, and many would argue they’re the most powerful in the universe. This team brings together the best heroes – and occasionally even reformed villains – to face any danger that comes their way. They’ve saved the world countless times, battling iconic and incredibly powerful enemies like Thanos, Loki, Doctor Doom, and Ultron. These villains are often powerful enough to challenge the entire team, and they certainly look and act like it.
The Avengers have faced many villains, and some of the most challenging aren’t the ones you’d expect. These enemies might not appear incredibly strong, but they consistently push the team to their limits and have proven to be surprisingly dangerous. These seven villains demonstrate that appearances can be misleading, and true power comes in many forms.
7) Enchantress

While the Avengers face many powerful female villains, Enchantress, also known as Amora, often gets less attention than she deserves. As an Asgardian sorceress, she was a key member in creating the Masters of Evil and frequently attempts to manipulate Thor and Asgard. Beyond typical Asgardian strength and abilities, she’s a master of ancient, god-level magic and incredibly clever, consistently outwitting even the smartest heroes. Though not a goddess herself, her power is immense – she could likely defeat most superhero teams without much difficulty if she truly focused her efforts.
6) Radioactive Man

Radioactive Man is a classic villain from the early days of comics, and many fans don’t realize just how powerful he is. Essentially a living nuclear reactor, he can control all forms of radioactivity. He’s incredibly strong – strong enough to fight toe-to-toe with Thor, and he even defeated Thor recently, despite Thor having access to the incredibly powerful Odin Force and magical weapons. What really makes Radioactive Man stand out is his control over radiation. He can create and manipulate it in any way he chooses, making him a formidable opponent for anyone. Without proper protection or powers to counter it, his radiation can be instantly fatal. He’s arguably one of the most dangerous people on Earth, yet he’s often overlooked.
5) The Hood

The Hood is a surprisingly powerful villain who often gets underestimated. Parker Robbins gained his abilities from a magical cloak that let him teleport. He soon discovered the cloak was far more potent than he initially thought, granting him the ability to transform into a powerful demon. Beyond his powers, he’s also a brilliant and charismatic leader, which allowed him to unite many lesser-known New York City villains. He even joined and manipulated the Cabal and Norman Osborn’s Superhero Initiative. He doesn’t look like much – just a man in a cloak carrying two pistols – but he’s a formidable demon capable of defeating the Avengers and has even wielded the Infinity Gauntlet.
4) Graviton

Garviton is a villain with the power to control gravity, one of the universe’s fundamental forces. Despite his immense potential, he’s often defeated quickly because he doesn’t fully understand his own strength. While gravity isn’t the strongest force, it’s incredibly versatile, and with proper training, Garviton could be unstoppable. He could easily crush opponents, or simply cut off their gravity, sending them hurtling into space. He even has the potential to create a black hole, giving him the power to destroy entire planets if he chose to. He’s a genuinely terrifying villain who, with a little development, could become a major threat to the entire universe.
3)Absorbing Man

Crusher Creel, also known as the Absorbing Man, is a frequently recurring Marvel villain, often used as brute force in supervillain teams. He gained his powers – the ability to take on the properties of anything he touches, along with incredible strength and resilience – from Loki as part of a scheme against Thor. Since then, he’s mostly been a bank robber who gets defeated by heroes. While he usually uses his powers for basic tasks, Creel could be incredibly dangerous if he were more intelligent. In some possible future timelines, a smarter Absorbing Man has even managed to kill many heroes using his abilities. He’s far more of a threat than people realize and is capable of overpowering a wide range of heroes.
2) Count Nefaria

Count Nefaria was a powerful crime boss – essentially a superpowered mafia leader – who grew frustrated with constantly losing to superheroes. He decided to give himself ion energy powers, which in the Marvel Universe usually transform people into incredibly strong and nearly indestructible energy beings, each with unique abilities. Nefaria famously defeated a top-tier Avengers team – including Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Wonder Man, Beast, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver, among others – single-handedly. He even managed to overpower both the Avengers and the Thunderbolts at the same time. Though he hasn’t appeared in a while, Nefaria is a serious threat – one of the few villains capable of defeating heroes like Thor and Wonder Man.
1) Kang the Conqueror

Kang the Conqueror is a remarkably powerful enemy of the Avengers, though many fans don’t fully appreciate just how dangerous he is. He’s spent his life conquering foes throughout time and across different realities, even defeating versions of the Avengers. In fact, he’s killed virtually every hero and villain somewhere in the multiverse. What makes Kang especially formidable is that he defeats his opponents through direct combat, personally battling and overcoming each one. This makes him one of the deadliest and most powerful villains in comic books.
