The Avengers have consistently saved the world from incredible dangers, but their victories have come at a cost. Over time, many team members have tragically fallen – some during battles alongside their teammates, and others while facing separate threats. Occasionally, heroes have even been lost after succumbing to darkness, forcing the Avengers to make heartbreaking decisions. Despite their immense power, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes aren’t immune to loss. Being an Avenger means constantly facing immense challenges and making difficult sacrifices, making it one of the most demanding roles a hero can take on.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve noticed something pretty consistent: death isn’t always the end! A lot of heroes who’ve fallen have a way of coming back, and it’s always at a crucial moment. I’m thinking of seven Avengers in particular who’ve actually ‘died’ but then rejoined the team to help when things got really tough. It’s become a bit of a running joke, but honestly, it’s part of what makes these stories so exciting!
7) Wonder Man

Wonder Man is gaining more attention thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he’s long been considered one of the Avengers’ strongest heroes. His body was converted into ionic energy, granting him incredible strength and resilience, though he’s faced death multiple times. He actually died in his very first comic appearance! Because he’s made of energy, he can usually be revived – energy can’t be created or destroyed. He died again in Force Works, but Scarlet Witch brought him back, and a powerful magic user has resurrected him on other occasions as well.
6) Hawkeye

Hawkeye is often overlooked as one of the Avengers, but he’s a highly skilled warrior. He’s become a master archer through intense training, and he’s proficient with many other weapons as well. What makes him unique is that he’s a normal human, meaning he’s always faced real danger. He sacrificed himself to save his team in “Avengers Disassembled: Chaos,” but was later resurrected by Scarlet Witch – the same person responsible for his death during the events of House of M.
5) The Wasp

The Wasp is a founding member of the Avengers and a consistently vital part of the team. Despite often being underestimated, she’s proven to be one of the Avengers’ strongest heroes, even leading the group for a time. She’s overcome incredible challenges, though she has technically died before. Once, she was tricked by a Skrull impersonating Hank Pym, who gave her what she believed were Pym Particles to grow in size. During the final battle of the Secret Invasion, she began to grow uncontrollably and became a living bomb. Thor managed to minimize the damage, but she still exploded. It was later revealed that she hadn’t been destroyed, but instead sent to the Microverse before eventually returning to the Avengers.
4) The Sentry

The Sentry is an incredibly powerful, but troubled, hero who eventually joined the Avengers. He became a member of several different Avengers teams, including the New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, and even the controversial Dark Avengers. Throughout his time with them, he constantly struggled to contain the Void – a dangerous, destructive force within him that once forced the world to erase his existence to prevent global annihilation. Things took a turn for the worse when Norman Osborn, while leading the Dark Avengers, intentionally fueled the Void. This allowed the monstrous entity to take over, leading to a devastating attempt to destroy Asgard, eliminate the Avengers, and obliterate Earth. The Sentry managed to regain control and sacrificed himself, asking Thor to end his life. But as a being with godlike power, he came back… only to be killed again by Knull. Now, he’s poised to return once more, as a demigod is hard to keep down.
3) The Vision

Ultron originally built Vision to defeat the Avengers, but Vision surprisingly joined their team and became a key member. Later, he believed he alone could save the world, which led to a fight that resulted in him being taken apart. He was later rebuilt as the White Vision, and eventually regained his original form. Sadly, he was killed by She-Hulk during the events of “Avengers Disassembled: Chaos” after being manipulated by Scarlet Witch. However, Vision has repeatedly returned to life and has been an Avenger at various times since then.
2) Thor

Throughout the Marvel Multiverse, there have been many different versions of Thor, and surprisingly, each one is capable of dying. Despite being a god, Norse gods aren’t immortal, and Thor has actually “died” and gone to Valhalla numerous times. He always finds a way back, sometimes in a new form or even by temporarily inhabiting a human body. For example, he was once killed by the Destroyer and returned by merging with a man named Jake Olsen. He faced a similar fate during Ragnarok and in the aftermath of “Avengers Disassembled.” He even died in the Fear Itself storyline, but returned to defeat Ulik, a troll who tried to take his place. Essentially, Thor frequently dies and is frequently resurrected.
1) Captain America

Captain America has died many times in the Marvel comics, but the most famous death occurred after the Civil War storyline. He lost a fight against Iron Man and those supporting hero registration, was put on trial, and then shockingly shot by Sharon Carter, who had been brainwashed. This was all part of a scheme by Red Skull. It turned out Red Skull hadn’t actually killed Cap, but had put him into a suspended state outside of time. There have been other times Captain America was believed to be dead, such as in the mid-1990s when his super-soldier serum wore off – and, strangely, Red Skull saved him that time too! He’s died far more often than most fans know, but he always finds a way to return.
