Many characters in fiction seem to borrow from existing heroes, and Batman is a frequent source of inspiration – or outright copying. People often accuse Marvel of creating characters based on Batman, with some pointing to two prominent heroes. Within DC Comics itself, variations on the Batman theme have also appeared, as the company explored different takes on the character. And the satirical series The Boys features its team, The Seven, which is directly inspired by Batman and the Justice League.
Here’s a ranking of characters who imitate Batman – from those who built their own identities to outright copycats – based on how much of a threat they’d pose to the Dark Knight himself.
7) Night-Owl
Night Owl, a character from the Watchmen universe, is often seen as a Batman imitator. Though he’s arguably more similar to Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle, Night Owl’s crime-fighting methods actually have more in common with Batman. While Dan Dreiberg (the second Night Owl) doesn’t have the same dual identity issues as Batman, comparing the original Night Owl, Hollis Mason, to Batman reveals striking similarities in their combat skills and strategic planning.
Hollis Boole, the original Night Owl, was a formidable opponent and might have even defeated a prime-condition Batman. Some stories claim he actually saved Bruce Wayne’s parents, preventing Batman from ever existing on his Earth. However, the later Night Owl, Dan Dreiberg, wouldn’t stand a chance against Batman.
6) Daredevil
While Daredevil isn’t simply a copy of Batman, it’s clear the Man Without Fear was inspired by the Dark Knight. This connection is largely due to Frank Miller, who wrote key stories for both characters – first Daredevil, then Batman. Interestingly, some believe Batman’s evolution may have actually been influenced by Daredevil. Regardless, the similarities are noticeable: both heroes adopted intimidating, dark alter egos (a bat and a devil) to strike fear into criminals, driven by the childhood trauma of losing their parents – a common theme in comic books.
A fight between Daredevil and Batman would be incredibly close. Both are determined and relentless fighters, and Daredevil’s heightened senses would give him an initial edge. Ultimately, though, Batman is a master strategist. If he learned about Daredevil’s senses, he could quickly devise a counter-strategy and win the fight decisively.
5) Nighthawk
Nighthawk is heavily inspired by Batman, and this is due to the fact that the Squadron Supreme was Marvel’s take on the Justice League. While many of the characters were obvious parallels – Hyperion to Superman and Power Princess to Wonder Woman – Nighthawk specifically mirrored Batman, even going so far as to leave the team due to a lack of trust in his fellow heroes.
This fight could go either way, depending on the circumstances. Nighthawk could win if he catches Batman off guard, but Batman generally has the upper hand if he has time to prepare. Both are skilled and strategic, but Batman is ultimately more effective. Despite their differences, they’re remarkably similar fighters.
4) Moon Knight
It’s easy to see why people compare Moon Knight to Batman. Both are nocturnal heroes who rely on fear to take down criminals, and they even use similar gadgets – Batman with batarangs and Moon Knight with crescent darts. But despite these similarities, they have key differences. Batman blends into the darkness with his black suit, while Moon Knight intentionally stands out with his white costume.
Unlike Batman, who refuses to kill, Moon Knight is willing to use lethal force when necessary. Their approaches to fighting also differ significantly: Batman is a careful planner, while Moon Knight is more impulsive and will endure punishment to secure victory. A fight between them would be incredibly violent, and Batman would likely suffer serious injuries, but ultimately, Batman’s strategy and skill would allow him to win.
3) Midnighter
Midnighter is DC Comics’ take on a Batman-like hero. Originally appearing in the Wildstorm Universe as a member of the Authority, he’s much more brutal in combat than Batman, showing no restraint against his enemies. Instead of working alone, Midnighter typically teams up with Apollo, who is essentially that universe’s Superman. The two eventually married, and both characters later joined the main DC Universe through the Stormwatch storyline.
Midnighter is different from Batman because he possesses genuine superpowers. These come from cybernetic enhancements – implants that give him abilities beyond those of a normal human. For example, he has a built-in computer in his brain that predicts every possible move in a fight, and carbon fiber woven into his muscles, making him incredibly strong and resilient. In a confrontation, Midnighter would have a clear edge over Batman, and is one of the few DC characters capable of defeating him.
2) Nemesis
Nemesis is a character created by Mark Millar for Icon Comics, and he had a very specific idea in mind when making him. He wanted to explore what a Batman-like figure would be like if they were actually the villain. Like Batman, Nemesis is a rich and privileged man who uses his wealth to develop advanced technology and become a masked figure. But instead of fighting crime, Nemesis actively commits it, killing people simply for his own amusement.
Police Chief Blake Morrow is a major opponent of Nemesis, determined to keep the public safe. Though lacking superpowers, Blake ultimately defeated Nemesis, but only after significant damage was done. While Batman would likely win against Nemesis too, their fight would be incredibly close, with both having similar skills and resources, making it even more devastating than his battles with the Joker.
1) Black Noir
The superhero team ‘The Seven’ in the show The Boys is heavily inspired by the Justice League. Homelander is a dark take on Superman, and Queen Maeve mirrors Wonder Woman. The team also includes characters reminiscent of Aquaman and Martian Manhunter. Black Noir is their version of Batman, though with a significant twist: in the comics, he’s revealed to be a clone of Homelander.
Among all the characters inspired by Batman in comics, Black Noir would likely give him the toughest fight. He possesses nearly all of Homelander’s abilities, but is also deeply disturbed and becomes a frightening enemy when his true nature is revealed. Black Noir could easily defeat Batman with a surprise attack. While Batman usually prepares for every possibility, even against Superman, he’d need to understand Black Noir’s capabilities to have any hope of winning.
