7 Best 1990s Power Rangers Villains, Ranked

As a lifelong movie and TV buff, I definitely remember the buzz when Mighty Morphin Power Rangers first came out in ’93 – it really captured a generation! Even now, decades later, people are still obsessed. I was thinking about the show the other day, and it got me wondering who the best villains from the 90s were. So, I decided to put together a list – my ranking of the top 7 Power Rangers villains from that first amazing decade, starting with the original Mighty Morphin baddies.

7. Goldar (Mighty Morphin)

I have to say, Goldar is just such an iconic villain from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! He might not always be the biggest threat, but you instantly recognize him. That design is unforgettable! He’s been in so many awesome battles with the Rangers, constantly trying to defeat them. Honestly, a flying warrior covered in gold armor? Pretty intimidating! When he’s on his game, he’s a force to be reckoned with.

However, Goldar’s performance is crucial to consider. Despite having all the necessary abilities, his relatively low win rate slightly lowers his overall ranking. He presents a greater challenge than many other villains, but consistently falls short of victory. Ultimately, Goldar remains a highly memorable character in the series, earning recognition simply for his persistent effort, even if he rarely succeeds.

6. Trakeena (Lost Galaxy)

Lost Galaxy was the last Power Rangers series of the 1990s, and its main villain deserves recognition. Though Scorpius begins as the primary threat, his daughter becomes even more dangerous after he dies, inheriting his power through a special staff. After training with Villamax, she becomes a skilled fighter, capable of battling the Power Rangers even without the staff’s power.

Throughout the season, Trakeena grows increasingly dangerous, becoming both more powerful and more determined. She can teleport and call upon special armor to make her a truly fearsome opponent in battle. Her father’s staff gives her a range of attacks – she can create fiery traps, powerful energy blasts, energy rings, and lightning, and even turn the staff into a sword. However, her greatest strength might be her resilience; she survived a fight with the Lost Galaxy Rangers and continued to cause trouble for the Lightspeed Rescue Rangers the following season.

5. Divatox (Turbo)

The Power Rangers Turbo series actually started with a movie of the same name, which introduced the season’s main villain: the flamboyant and self-absorbed pirate queen, Divatox. Divatox commands a band of evil pirates, searching for treasure and galactic fame. But more than anything, she wants to destroy the Power Rangers.

Divatox was a consistently funny and clever villain, even though most of her schemes to defeat the Rangers didn’t work. However, she wasn’t just amusing – she actually caused real damage, notably destroying the Command Center. This left the Rangers in a tough spot at the beginning of Power Rangers In Space, and that impact is why she ranks as number five on this list.

4. Astronema (In Space)

Let’s talk about Power Rangers In Space. Coming in at number four on our list is Astronema, the Princess of Darkness. What makes her so compelling is that she’s actually the long-lost sister of Andros, the Red Ranger. This family connection adds a lot of depth to the story, and it’s incredibly satisfying when Astronema eventually becomes a Ranger herself, revealing her true name as Karone.

Astronema is easily one of the most compelling villains in Power Rangers, particularly when you consider her complex story and character development. She’s also incredibly powerful and even formed her own team of villains, who might reappear later on this list. Few villains have had a greater effect on the Power Rangers, and she absolutely earns her place among the top four.

3. Lord Zedd (Mighty Morphin)

Lord Zedd is one of the most recognizable Power Rangers villains ever. Calling himself the Emperor of Evil, he immediately established himself as a major threat and made other villains seem less impressive when he arrived on the scene.

When Lord Zedd first appeared in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, he instantly felt like a major threat and boosted the power of his villains. Despite many failed schemes, he achieved significant victories, most notably taking away Tommy’s powers. He also controlled Serpentera, a tremendously powerful Zord that nearly destroyed the city. Later, Zedd teamed up with Rita Repulsa to defeat the leaders of the Machine Empire after they had initially been driven away. As a true Power Rangers icon, Lord Zedd rightfully earns the number 2 spot on this list.

2. The Psycho Rangers (In Space/Lost Galaxy)

The Power Rangers have battled many dangerous villains, but the Psycho Rangers were among the most formidable. Created by Astronema as perfect Ranger adversaries, these evil counterparts to the In Space Rangers could locate the Power Rangers by tracking their energy. What made them especially difficult to fight was that each Psycho Ranger was specifically trained to counter the fighting style of their Power Ranger counterpart.

I always thought the In Space Rangers really earned their victory, but bringing those villains back in Lost Galaxy is what really changed things for the whole series. It all came down to Psycho Pink – she was seriously dangerous! She managed to grab the Savage Sword by reading the mind of Kendrix, the Pink Ranger from Lost Galaxy. That led to an amazing battle between Kendrix, Cassie (the In Space Pink Ranger), and Psycho Pink. While the Galaxy Megazord eventually destroyed Psycho Pink, she’d already caused so much chaos with the Savage Sword. Kendrix had to destroy the sword to stop the storm, but sadly, she didn’t survive the resulting energy blast. What makes Psycho Pink stand out is that she’s one of the few villains who actually killed a Ranger, which is why I think the Psycho Rangers deserve the number two spot on any villain list!

1. Rita Repulsa (Mighty Morphin)

Most people immediately think of Rita Repulsa when Power Rangers is mentioned. While many villains have graced the show, Rita stands out as the most iconic. Introduced in the very first season of Mighty Morphin, she quickly became popular thanks to her dramatic personality and outrageous plans. She was both scary and funny, a combination that made her so memorable. Plus, her schemes often put the Rangers in tough spots, and she even played a role in creating another well-known Ranger.

As a lifelong Power Rangers fan, I always found Rita Repulsa’s plans fascinating, even when they failed. She was constantly pushing the Rangers to their limits, and her biggest win, in my opinion, was creating the Green Ranger. She took a normal kid, Tommy Oliver, put a spell on him, and gave him the power of the Green Ranger. It was genius, really. He was the perfect inside man, and came closer to defeating the Rangers than anyone else. He even managed to corrupt Alpha 5, nearly erase Zordon, and shut down the Command Center – all before completely overwhelming them in a fight! Of course, Tommy eventually became a hero himself, but Rita’s actions at that time truly left a lasting mark on the entire series.

We’re focusing on Rita’s actions within the original ’90s run of the show. Beyond Rita, she’s the only villain to actually kill a Ranger. In the episode Once & Always, a robotic version of Rita – a revived form connected to Alpha 8 – killed Trini, which led to Trini’s daughter eventually becoming a Ranger. While her comic book storylines are extensive, even based solely on the show, Rita is clearly the most iconic Power Rangers villain, and she’ll probably always hold that top spot.
