Every month brings changes as some titles exit streaming platforms and new ones move in to take their place. September is no exception, with major streamers like Netflix, Paramount+, Peacock, HBO Max, and others adding an exciting collection of action movie classics to their libraries. We’re going to highlight the top picks for each service this month, so if you’re already a subscriber, get ready to hit play! If you’re not yet a member but fancy watching one of these classic or near-classic action films, we’ve got you covered – we’ve included which platform they’ll be available on.
All the films made their debut on their new streaming platforms on September 1st. So, let’s dive right in and begin our discussion.
This version maintains the original meaning of the text while using more common and easily understood language. The phrase “hit their respective new streamer” was replaced with “made their debut on their new streaming platforms,” and “without further ado” was rephrased as “So, let’s dive right in and begin our discussion.” This helps make the text clearer and more approachable to a wider audience.
7) Edge of Tomorrow — Netflix
Approximately a month following its debut on Peacock, the action-packed movie “Edge of Tomorrow” is now transitioning to Netflix. This film showcases one of Tom Cruise’s finest performances and demonstrates his versatility as an actor, particularly in portraying roles that deviate from his usual image. For instance, he did this exceptionally well in “Tropic Thunder,” where he played a completely distinct character named Les Grossman, contrasting sharply with his transformation into the cowardly public affairs officer Major William Cage.
In essence, “Edge of Tomorrow” could be likened to “The Tomorrow War,” given better rhythm and an exceptional screenplay. Despite its flaws in initial box office performance back in 2014, it was clear to those who saw it that this film had the potential to gain a resurgence at some point down the line. Starring Tom Cruise, the narrative (adapted from the Japanese light novel “All You Need Is Kill”), boasts impressive action sequences, but it’s Emily Blunt’s performance that truly steals the show. She demonstrates her ability to excel in high-octane battle scenes just as convincingly as she delivers comedic timing, heartwarming monologues, and poignant expressions of emotion (as evidenced in “Oppenheimer” and its expressive looks of disapproval that make one’s blood run cold).
6) The Running Man — Netflix
Instead of just waiting for the upcoming remake on November 14th featuring Glen Powell, how about you dive into the original “The Running Man”? In this film, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Ben Richards, a law-abiding police officer in a dystopian future (talk about far ahead!) who finds himself behind bars for doing what’s right. After escaping, he learns that his actions have been misconstrued, with people believing him to be a cold-blooded killer.
This is the perspective of Amber Mendez, whom Richards encounters living in his brother’s apartment. She plans on turning him in, but fate has other plans. With his fighting skills, he’s offered a chance to earn glory by competing in Damon Killian’s brutal television show called “The Running Man”. Why not give it a watch and see how Richards navigates through this bloodthirsty game?
Although “The Running Man” deviates from its original Stephen King storyline, it still offers an enjoyable action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. He thrives in this role, portraying a righteous character forced to battle against the odds and expose the true villain within society. Notably, game-show host Richard Dawson delivers an impressive performance as Killian, a character who manipulates others with alarming frequency.
5) 3:10 to Yuma (2007) — Peacock
In my opinion, before I embarked on crafting Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine a unique Western in the form of Logan, I found myself at the helm directing this more traditional Western remake – that being 3:10 to Yuma. When it comes to Westerns from the 2000s, few can rival its solid structure, breathtaking visuals, and exceptional performances. It stands as one of those remarkable remakes that surpasses the original, both sharing roots in Elmore Leonard’s short stories Get Shorty and Out of Sight.
Christian Bale portrays Dan Evans, a struggling rancher who lost his leg during military service and faces difficulties repaying a banker. He finds an opportunity when he joins a group hired by the railroad to transport notorious outlaw leader Ben Wade (Russell Crowe), nicknamed 3:10 to Yuma. The journey, however, is far from simple as Wade’s gang is fiercely loyal and determined to free their leader. Yet, in the unpredictable world of the wild West, alliances can change swiftly.
4) Bad Boys — Peacock
Starting a movie franchise still running today, despite a significant break between sequels, Michael Bay’s “Bad Boys” marked an impressive directorial debut that showcases his strong points without overly highlighting his commonly criticized flaws. The plot is well-structured, the action is thrilling, and the camaraderie between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence has the makings of a legendary film franchise.
The story unfolds with detectives Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett and Smith’s Mike Lowrey, both Miami PD narcotics investigators, as the main characters. Their latest bust of $100 million worth of Mafia heroin, stored in their station’s safe, has mysteriously disappeared. To track down the perpetrator, Lowrey enlists help from an ex-girlfriend to uncover who’s recently amassed significant wealth. In the process, she and her friend, Julie Mott, get employed as escorts for a corrupt ex-cop. However, the night takes a deadly turn, leaving only Julie alive. Now, Burnett and Lowrey have a promising lead, but they also need to safeguard Julie because she’s become involved in their investigation.
3) Sicario — Peacock
Despite Day of the Soldado not living up to the same level of quality as its predecessor, it was Isabela Merced’s first major showcase of her immense talent. She has previously shown interest in reprising her role for a third film, and it would be wise to consider that opportunity. However, it is important to note that even with Merced’s exceptional performance, Day of the Soldado doesn’t compare to Sicario.
The film “Sicario” is not only filled with thrilling action and music that amplifies these moments, but it’s primarily a thought-provoking movie. We follow FBI special agent Kate Macer, played by Emily Blunt, who is determined and ambitious, striving for career advancement within the FBI’s drug war efforts. As the story unfolds, she begins to question if the two sides of this conflict are truly as distinct as they seem. This theme is explored most powerfully through the character of Alejandro Gillick (Benicio del Toro). Del Toro’s performance in this film is often considered his strongest, with intense emotions portrayed without a spoken word. By the time we reach the most tension-filled dinner scene of the 2010s, we find ourselves questioning whether Gillick or the movie’s protagonist is more captivating.
2) A Walk Among the Tombstones — Peacock
As a passionate film enthusiast, I firmly believe that among Liam Neeson’s action movies post-Taken, none deserves a sequel more than A Walk Among the Tombstones. Compared to films like Non-Stop, it maintains a slightly quieter tone, but the exhilaration is just as palpable. In my opinion, this understated intensity makes it all the more compelling and worth exploring further in a potential sequel.
In the novel with the same title, serving as the tenth installment of a series, we delve into the story of Matt Scudder, a former NYPD Detective played by Liam Neeson who has recently quit drinking. Now working as a private investigator, he embarks on a new case: finding and rescuing the kidnapped wife of a wealthy drug trafficker. This investigation could potentially have a greater impact on Scudder than his entire time in the NYPD, but only if he manages to get through it. Neeson’s performance in this film is exceptional, as he seems to understand that this material is more substantial than the average Blacklight productions from this period of his career (a genre that may have been eclipsed by The Naked Gun’s success).
1) Face/Off — Paramount+
Amongst Nicholas Cage’s three renowned action films, released within a two-year period, the pinnacle of what John Woo combined with Hollywood offers is undoubtedly “Face/Off.” The narrative might seem whimsical, while the performances, particularly by Cage and John Travolta as Castor Troy, lean towards the absurd. The film features flying doves, golden weapons, and a captivating blend of high-quality entertainment and content.
Enjoying the unique performances of both Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in their contrasting roles offers a lot of entertainment. It’s challenging to decide who outshines the other in the film, but Cage takes the lead because his initial 20 minutes allow for an unleashed performance, while the remainder of the movie presents him as the troubled cop grappling with the guilt of having killed his son. However, these two stars aren’t the only reasons this ’90s gem stands out. It masterfully transforms a preposterous premise into something captivating, somewhat plausible, and emotionally impactful for certain characters. Despite its exploration of multiple genres, it is primarily an adrenaline-pumping action film, boasting exceptional gunfight sequences that are signature to director Woo.
