The Justice League is DC Comics’ most famous superhero team, featuring its most popular characters. Over time, the team’s members have changed, and many different versions have formed. The Justice League is so important to the DC universe that countless versions exist across its many parallel worlds. These alternate versions of the team are incredibly diverse – some are just as heroic as the original, while others are shockingly villainous. Here are some of the most compelling versions of the Justice League from across the multiverse.
The DC Multiverse is full of infinite worlds, and nearly all of them have their own version of the Justice League. While these teams might look different, have different members, or come from different origins, they all share the same core purpose: bringing together the most powerful heroes to protect their world.
7) Justice Lords
The Justice Lords, originating from the DC Animated Universe, come from an alternate Earth (Earth-50) where a single tragedy changed the course of its heroes. It began when Lex Luthor became president and ordered the execution of the Flash. In response, Superman killed Luthor, marking a turning point. This led Superman and the rest of the Justice League – including Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Martian Manhunter – to become the Justice Lords, who rule their world with strict and often brutal control. They’ve repeatedly tried to conquer other universes, including Earth-12, leading to several conflicts with its Justice League. Due to their compelling and tragic backstory, and their intimidating nature, the Justice Lords have become popular enough to appear in DC comics and various storylines.
6) Gods and Monsters Justice League
The Justice League gets a dark and unique makeover in the animated movie Justice League: Gods and Monsters. This version of the team consists of just Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, but they’re far from the heroes we know. Superman is the son of General Zod and was raised by a Mexican immigrant family, Batman is a vampire, and Wonder Woman is a New God. Each character has a compelling and original backstory. Together, they operate as anti-heroes who aren’t afraid to kill, which makes both the government and the public wary of them. Despite their methods, the movie and accompanying comics portray them as fundamentally good people trying to do what’s right.
5) Justice Legion Alpha
The Justice League’s heroic deeds continue to inspire people centuries into the future. In the 853rd century, after humanity has spread throughout the solar system, the Justice Legion Alpha protects Earth. This team is made up of future versions of classic heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Atom, and Starman, alongside new heroes like Owlwoman and Resurrection Man. They’ve even traveled back in time to team up with their predecessors and battle threats like Solaris and Vandal Savage. With powerful abilities and unwavering dedication to helping others, the Justice Legion Alpha shows that the DC Universe has a hopeful future.
4) Justice League Beyond
The Justice League Beyond, similar to the Justice Lords, originally appeared in the DC Animated Universe and later expanded into comic books. Set on Earth-12 in a futuristic timeline, this version of the Justice League combines heroes from different eras to safeguard humanity. While classic heroes like Superman and Big Barda remain, the team also includes newer members such as the Flash, Green Lantern Kai Ro, Aquagirl, Warhawk, and Micron. The team is best known for Terry McGinnis, the teenage Batman Beyond, who took over the mantle from Bruce Wayne. Together, they’ve faced major threats like Starro, Jax-Ur, and even the Justice Lords themselves.
3) Justice League Incarnate
The DC Multiverse is constantly facing threats, so a team was formed to protect it. The Justice League Incarnate is a group of heroes from different universes who united to defend reality. They first came together to battle the incredibly powerful villain, the Empty Hand, after he destroyed Earth-7. The team is led by President Superman from Earth-23 and includes heroes like Mary Marvel, Thunderer, Atomic Batman, Captain Carrot, Aquawoman, Dino-Cop, Red Racer, Machinehead, and Green Lantern Abin Sur. Later, Avery Hoe Flash, Flashpoint Batman, and Doctor Multiverse joined their ranks. The Justice League Incarnate shows that heroes come in all kinds of forms throughout the multiverse.
2) Crime Syndicate
The Crime Syndicate is a famous take on the classic superhero team concept, acting as a twisted mirror image of the Justice League. They come from Earth-3, a world where good and evil are reversed, and are a group of incredibly powerful and cruel supervillains. Essentially, they have the same abilities as the Justice League, but with no sense of right or wrong, and rule through intimidation and force. The team’s core members include Ultraman, Owlman, Superwoman, Johnny Quick, and Power Ring, and have been joined by others like Atomica, Grid, and Deathstorm. The Crime Syndicate is a major enemy of the main Justice League and played a key role in making the idea of evil counterparts from alternate universes popular.
1) Kingdom Come Justice League
The Justice League depicted in the Kingdom Come universe best embodies the history and ideals of DC Comics. In this alternate reality (Earth-22), Superman retires after a devastating event, leading to the rise of a reckless new generation of anti-heroes. Forced out of retirement, Superman assembles a new Justice League – a team spanning multiple generations of heroes, from the earliest days of comics to the present – to restore hope and stop the chaos. This League includes iconic figures like Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Flash (Wally West), alongside heroes from earlier eras like Green Lantern Alan Scott. Though many members sacrifice themselves, the League ultimately succeeds in ushering in a renewed era of heroism and optimism.
