The X-Men are famous for their stories exploring alternate realities and different versions of Earth. Many iconic Marvel Comics tales involving parallel universes center around the X-Men, often showing bleak futures where Professor X’s hope for peace fails and mutants face extinction. However, wherever mutants exist in any universe, you’ll find X-Men fighting for them. There have been countless alternate X-Men teams across the multiverse, and these are some of the very best.
The X-Men are often featured in Marvel’s most compelling and often grim alternate reality stories. Across many universes, mutants face incredible hardship, but the X-Men, in all their variations, consistently fight for their survival and offer a beacon of hope.
7) X-Men 2099
In a dark and technologically advanced future on Earth-928, powerful corporations control everything, and mutants have been nearly destroyed. But in the year 2099, a mutant rebel named Xi’an Chi Xan, known as Desert Ghost, was inspired by the teachings of Professor X to form a new team of X-Men. This X-Men 2099 team is unique, made up of a fresh generation of mutants including Skullfire, Cerebra, Bloodhawk, Metalhead, Krystalin, and Meanstreak. Together, they fight for those who are oppressed in this bleak world and protect Halo City, a safe haven for anyone considered an outcast.
6) Mutant Resistance
In an alternate reality (Earth-11326), after humans nearly wiped out the mutant population, Magneto established Fortress X as a safe haven. The remaining X-Men formed the Mutant Resistance to protect it. With fewer than one hundred mutants left worldwide, they’ve been under constant attack for a thousand days by the U.S. Government and a villainous version of the Avengers, who are determined to eliminate all mutants. Cannonball leads the Resistance in battle, alongside heroes like Basilisk, Rogue, Storm, Gambit, Colossus, Jubilee, Namor, and Revenant.
5) The Six
The Mutant X storyline features a mind-swap between Havok and his alternate self from a darker universe (Earth-1298). In this reality, Cyclops died young, and Havok took his place as the leader of a twisted version of the X-Men, known as the Six. This team is made up of radically different versions of familiar heroes: Beast transformed into a frog-like creature called the Brute, Storm became the vampire Bloodstorm, Iceman is permanently frozen, Angel became the winged hero Fallen, and Jean Grey’s clone, Madelyne Prior, is now the powerful Marvel Woman. The Six battle against corrupted versions of heroes like Professor X, Nick Fury, and the Avengers.
4) Witchbreed
Even today, people with mutant abilities face discrimination, so it’s no surprise things were much harder in 1602. In an alternate Marvel universe set in Elizabethan England (Earth-311), mutants are called “Witchbreeds” and wrongly believed to be the children of witches and the Devil. Seen as evil, they are especially hunted by the Spanish Inquisition. However, a gifted and kind telepath named Carlos Xavier took in five Witchbreeds – early versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel – and taught them to master their powers. The idea of the X-Men existing during a time of intense religious fervor and superstition was a compelling way to explore the history of prejudice.
3) Days of Future Past X-Men
“Days of Future Past” is a famous X-Men story that depicts a truly bleak future. In this timeline, set on Earth-811, giant robots called Sentinels have taken over the world and almost wiped out mutants. The few remaining X-Men – including Magneto, Wolverine, Shadowcat, and Storm – make a desperate attempt to travel back in time and prevent the Sentinels from ever becoming powerful. Although Shadowcat manages to go to the past, she can’t change the terrible future. Despite this setback, the surviving X-Men, like Magneto, Shadowcat, and several others, continue fighting for their freedom against the Sentinels in their own time.
2) Secret Society X-Men
When the villain known as the Maker created a new universe (Earth-6160), he aimed to eliminate anyone who could challenge his power, starting with Professor X. Without Professor X’s guidance, young mutants are left to discover and control their abilities on their own. The Ultimate X-Men series presents a fresh take on the team, reimagining them as Japanese teenage girls attending high school. They band together to defend themselves against the dangerous Shadow King and a cult called the Children of the Atom. Armor and Maystorm started a secret group, the X-Men, which also includes different versions of familiar faces like Psylocke, Cyclops, Molly Hayes, and Nico Minoru. This new generation of mutants must navigate their powers and protect the world without any adult supervision.
1) Age of Apocalypse X-Men
A time-traveling villain named Legion attempted to kill Magneto as a young man, but Professor X gave his life to save him. This sacrifice prevented Professor X from ever forming the X-Men, creating a new reality called Earth-295. Without the X-Men, the villain Apocalypse quickly took over the world. Driven by Professor X’s memory and ideals, Magneto assembled his own team of X-Men to fight back. This new team included familiar faces like Weapon X (Logan), Rogue, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and many others, all with unique designs and reimagined histories. The X-Men from this alternate reality, known as the Age of Apocalypse, are widely considered the most memorable and iconic version of Marvel’s mutant heroes.
