Autumn is officially here, bringing cooler temperatures after a long, hot summer. And what’s fall without a little bit of spooky fun? Halloween is a hugely popular holiday where people love decorating, giving out treats, and dressing up in costumes. To get into the spirit of the season, we’ve put together a list of some fantastic animated series perfect for a thrilling and autumnal experience.
Over The Garden Wall
Where To Watch: Hulu
Let’s start with a standout animated series for fall: *Over the Garden Wall*. Though it only lasted one season, it’s become incredibly popular and well-respected in the animation community. The show follows brothers Greg and Wirt as they journey through a mysterious place called “The Unknown,” which is full of spooky and magical happenings, and perfectly captures the feeling of autumn. It’s appropriate for families, so it’s not too frightening for viewers of all ages.
I’m still completely obsessed with *Over The Garden Wall*, and it’s awesome to see so many other fans out there! MONDO just announced a new line of action figures, which is incredible news. We haven’t heard anything about a sequel to Wirt and Greg’s story, sadly, but Cartoon Network did make a really cool stop-motion video last year to celebrate the show’s tenth anniversary. Seriously, if you’ve never seen this show, you *need* to watch it, especially as the fall season rolls around – it’s the perfect vibe!
Gravity Falls
Where To Watch: Disney+, Hulu
Even though *Gravity Falls* is set during a summer in the Pacific Northwest, don’t let the location fool you! This Disney animated series is packed with supernatural creatures and crazy adventures, making it a great fit alongside other shows like it. The story follows twins Dipper and Mabel as they spend the summer with their great-uncle, Grunkle Stan. Stan’s already a bit odd running a tourist trap called the “Mystery Shack,” but the kids quickly uncover all sorts of strange happenings and a huge conspiracy that puts the whole town in danger.
Out of all the episodes in *Gravity Falls’* two seasons, “Summerween” best captures the spirit of spooky season. The creators cleverly celebrated Halloween by inventing a new holiday where the characters could trick-or-treat while facing a frightening monster.
Hilda
Where To Watch: Netflix
Both *Gravity Falls* and *Over the Garden Wall* are suitable for families, but they also include creepy scenes that fit the Halloween vibe. *Hilda*, a three-season show available on Netflix, is different. It centers around a blue-haired girl and her mother who live in a remote, mountainous area. Like the other two shows, *Hilda* follows its main character on adventures where she meets magical creatures, particularly when she visits the city of Trolberg.
The animated series *Hilda* has a cozy, autumnal atmosphere. It began as a series of graphic novels by Luke Pearson, and the unique world he created adapted beautifully to animation. While there won’t be a fourth season-the story concluded with the film *Hilda and the Mountain King*-the movie provides a fitting and satisfying ending to Hilda’s adventures.
Castlevania
Where To Watch: Netflix
Netflix has consistently delivered excellent animated series, and *Castlevania* is a prime example. The show, based on the Konami video game, followed Trevor Belmont and his allies in their battle against Dracula over four seasons. Now, the story continues with *Castlevania: Nocturne*, a sequel series spanning two seasons. The *Castlevania* universe stands out as one of the most intense and graphic animated series available on the platform, with Netflix embracing the violent aspects of the Belmont family’s adventures.
The animated series *Castlevania* is a fantastic take on the original games, and it’s perfect for watching during Halloween or any spooky time of year. The show follows the Belmont family as they battle vampires and other terrifying creatures across six exciting seasons. While fans are eager for more, a third season of *Castlevania: Nocturne* hasn’t been announced yet, leaving many wondering if this dark and thrilling world will return. And speaking of vampires…
Shiki
Where to Watch: Crunchyroll
It’s rare to find truly scary anime, as most spooky stories outside of Junji Ito’s work don’t quite hit the mark. That’s where *Shiki* comes in. This 22-episode series, which first aired in 2010, tells a complete story about a small, isolated Japanese town terrorized by vampires, and it’s sure to captivate viewers.
Although shows like *The Summer Hikaru Died* have helped evolve anime horror, *Shiki* is a particularly good fit for the autumn season. *Shiki* is structured like a collection of interconnected stories, focusing on different characters within the same town. Despite not immediately appearing frightening due to its art style, *Shiki* creates a genuinely creepy atmosphere, and the horror quickly escalates as the plot unfolds.
AAAHH!!!! Real Monsters
Where To Watch: Paramount+
Let’s finish with a truly spooky animated series from Nickelodeon: *AAAHH!!!! Real Monsters*. This show, featuring Ickus, Oblina, and Krumm, actually came out years before *Harry Potter* and *Monsters, Inc.* It’s about monsters learning how to scare people as part of their schooling. The series ran for four seasons and included more than fifty episodes.
Though it first aired in 1997, the complete series is now available on Paramount+. It offers a fun, family-friendly story with a distinctive look for its monsters. While some episodes focus on Halloween, the show’s overall story is unique and may have paved the way for other shows about supernatural schools that came later.
