7 Best Bromances in Marvel Comics (Including 1 The MCU Desperately Needs)

Over the years, Marvel Comics has created some truly memorable friendships, particularly between male heroes. These ‘bromances’ are known for their playful teasing, but these characters always have each other’s backs when things get tough. This list focuses specifically on these male-to-male bonds, so relationships like those between mentors and students (such as Miles Morales and Peter Parker) and strong friendships between female heroes (like Kamala Khan and Kate Bishop) aren’t included.

Whether they’re close pals or rivals who enjoy teasing each other, here’s a look at some of the greatest friendships in Marvel Comics.

7) Iron Man & War Machine

Bromances aren’t limited to young characters; a prime example is the long-standing friendship between Tony Stark and James Rhodes. They’re incredibly close, demonstrated by Tony entrusting Rhodes with the Iron Man mantle when he could no longer fulfill the role. Their bond runs deep, meaning they support each other through everything, even when it’s unwanted. This was evident when Tony struggled with alcoholism, and remarkably, even after Rhodes’ death – Tony used AI technology to revive him following the events of Civil War II.

6) Sam Wilson & Winter Soldier

Captain America and Bucky Barnes were once incredibly close, with Bucky originally playing a supporting role. Later, Falcon took on that same role alongside Captain America. It’s natural that when Sam Wilson became the new Captain America and Bucky was the Winter Soldier, they formed a strong, close friendship. They consistently work together and, being equals, aren’t afraid to playfully challenge each other. The popularity of their dynamic is clear, as Marvel created a Disney+ series specifically to showcase the duo of Sam Wilson and the Winter Soldier – a truly perfect pair.

5) Black-Ant & Taskmaster

It’s surprising how little we discuss the close friendships between supervillains. There are actually quite a few, like the bond between Shocker and Boomerang – Shocker was incredibly dedicated to bringing Boomerang back to life after he died saving Spider-Man. But perhaps the best villainous friendship in Marvel is between Taskmaster and Black Ant. Taskmaster is a seriously underrated villain, and his hilarious, often inappropriate, friendship with Black Ant is always a highlight in the comics. They’ve been friends since their time with the Initiative, and whenever they team up, they’re consistently the most entertaining characters on the page.

4) Star-Lord & Nova

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is missing a perfect pairing: Star-Lord and Nova. With Peter Quill already established and Nova set to appear in a Disney+ special, bringing Richard Ryder into the MCU creates an opportunity for a fantastic team-up. These two have one of the most fun and dynamic relationships in Marvel comics, despite a recent falling out in the Imperial storyline. When they’re working together, they’re both hilarious and incredibly powerful, as proven during the Annihilation Wave event.

3) Spider-Man & Human Torch

As a longtime comics reader, I always loved the dynamic between Spider-Man and the Human Torch – it’s one of the earliest and best ‘bromances’ Marvel ever created. They first met way back in Amazing Spider-Man #1 – Spidey even tried to join the Fantastic Four, but quickly realized they didn’t offer a salary! From there, a real friendship blossomed, and they teamed up on numerous adventures. While they don’t hang out as much these days, they’ve always got each other’s backs. What really makes them special, though, is the humor. Their playful jabs and pranks are gold. Seriously, who could forget Johnny Storm sticking a ‘Kick Me’ sign on Spider-Man when he was running around as the Bombastic Bag-Man? That perfectly sums up their hilarious relationship.

2) Rocket Raccoon & Groot

Rocket Raccoon and Groot have the strongest friendship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While their bond is heartwarming on screen, it’s a bit different in the original comics. The movies consistently show them as a close, supportive team, always fighting together. In the comics, however, Groot’s personality can change each time he’s reborn, impacting their dynamic. Even so, when they are together in the comics, Rocket and Groot make a fantastic duo, rivaled only by pairings like Star-Lord and Nova in the wider Marvel universe.

1) Luke Cage & Iron Fist

Luke Cage and Iron Fist have arguably the strongest friendship in Marvel Comics history. Their connection was so significant that their comic series was rebranded as Power Man and Iron Fist, focusing on their partnership. Together, they formed the team Heroes for Hire and have consistently supported each other through everything life threw their way. Even when Luke tried to prioritize family, his wife, Jessica Jones, encouraged him to reconnect with Danny (Iron Fist). Many fans consider Luke and Danny to be Marvel’s ultimate bromance, surpassing all others.
