With the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, it’s a good time to look back at the best characters from the entire Avatar franchise. The world of Avatar—filled with Na’vi, humans, and unique creatures—takes place on the fascinating planet Pandora. While everyone has their own favorites, some characters stand out as particularly well-loved.
In Avatar, the distinction between humans and the Na’vi becomes increasingly unclear. Several characters permanently transfer their consciousness into Na’vi bodies, essentially abandoning their human forms. Because of this, only one character remains entirely human throughout the films, and she’s the first one we’ll discuss.
7) Dr. Grace Augustine
![]()
Dr. Grace is a scientist who studies alien plants and travels to the planet Pandora with the RDA. She’s different from most of the humans there because she respects the Na’vi people and their home, and she joins Jake in fighting against the RDA’s destructive practices. Sadly, she dies near the end of the first movie, but her Avatar later gives birth to a daughter named Kiri.
Dr. Grace is a standout character in the first movie, and likely would have been a fan favorite throughout the series if she’d appeared in more films. However, because she doesn’t have much screen time, she isn’t quite as memorable as some of the other characters.
6) Varang
![]()
Varang is the standout new villain in Avatar: Fire and Ash. As the leader of the Ash People, she leads them into conflict with the Air Na’vi and other tribes. She’s a compelling character thanks to her love of weaponry, alliance with humans, and relationship with Quaritch. Notably, Varang is the first truly malicious Na’vi introduced in the Avatar franchise.
5) Kiri
![]()
Kiri is a fascinating and enigmatic character in Avatar. Her unusual origins – being the daughter of Dr. Grace’s Avatar – leave many questions unanswered. The series also focuses on her unique abilities and deep connection to Eywa, making her a truly compelling figure.
4) Lo’ak
![]()
Lo’ak, the second son of Jake Sully, wasn’t seen until the movie The Way of Water, but he’s quickly become a fan favorite. He’s a compelling and often sad character, burdened by guilt over his brother’s death and always striving to earn his father’s approval. This emotional struggle intensifies in Fire and Ash, as the distance between Lo’ak and Jake grows.
3) Neytiri
![]()
Jake Sully finds an ally and teacher in the strong warrior Neytiri on Pandora. They fall in love and start a family, eventually choosing to leave their home and seek refuge in the ocean with their children.
Neytiri and Jake have different views on humans, which creates a compelling tension between them. As the films progress, Neytiri’s dislike of humans grows, leading to conflict with Spider, her adopted son. Zoe Saldaña delivers a fantastic performance as Neytiri, making her a particularly nuanced and emotionally resonant character in the series.
2) Jake Sully
![]()
Jake Sully is a more compelling character than most of those around him, which is unusual for the hero of a story. Over the course of the three films, his transformation is fascinating – he starts as a paralyzed human Marine, becomes a Na’vi spy, and ultimately fully embraces life as one of the Na’vi people. We watch him grow into a husband, a father, and a leader of the resistance, all while trying to balance his role as a warrior with his duties to his family and community.
What makes Jake Sully a compelling character is his complex situation on Pandora. He leads the Na’vi resistance against the humans, even though he’s part human himself. He quickly becomes a skilled rider and earns the title of Toruk Makto, despite being new to the planet. Interestingly, he repeatedly spares the life of his enemy, Quaritch, even as Quaritch relentlessly hunts him. While some viewers criticize Jake, it’s difficult to deny that he’s a truly remarkable character.
1) Colonel Miles Quaritch
![]()
Colonel Miles Quaritch is arguably the most compelling character in the Avatar series. He begins as a tough RDA Marine who opposes Jake Sully and dies in the first movie’s climactic fight. But in The Way of Water, Quaritch returns as a clone with his memories transferred into an Avatar body. Throughout the second and upcoming third films, he’s driven by a desire for revenge against Jake and a longing to reconnect with his son, Spider.
Colonel Quaritch is a fascinating and multi-layered character in the Avatar films, and Fire and Ash really explores his internal conflict. His intense dislike of Jake Sully makes him a formidable and threatening villain, even in the dangerous environment of Pandora. Plus, he’s genuinely funny and consistently steals the show. Many consider Quaritch to be the best character in the Avatar franchise, and he’s easily one of the most memorable villains in movie history.
